McArthur Hamburg played for head coach Sim Cooley’s Bobcats in 1963-64.

McArthur, who originally committed to Memphis out of Enterprise High School, received the Billy Haywood Award, which is the highest honor given to the athlete who exemplified both athleticism and outstanding character.

The Bobcats were 7-3 in his freshman season and 9-1 in 1964, the school's first state championship under Coach Cooley. Hamburg was an All-State lineman in 1964.

He was a member of the J-Club and Art Club at Jones and received a football scholarship to Louisiana College.

After playing football, Hamburg enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, trained at Camp LeJeune (North Carolina) and was sent to Vietnam.

On March 18, 1968, Lance Corporal Hamburg was involved in a fierce, 12-hour battle in the Quang Tri Province of South Vietnam. He was among 17 who lost their lives in service that day.

Hamburg was awarded the National Defense Medal, the Infantry Combat Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Square Medal and the Purple Heart for his courageous actions that day.
