Hall of Fame
Carlos McDaniel was a standout basketball player under JCJC Hall of Famer A.B. Howard.
As a freshman in 1960-61, McDaniel was an All-South Division and honorable mention All-State player. As a sophomore in 1961-62, he led the Bobcats in scoring, was named All-State and All-South Division. He was selected for the school’s Hall of Fame in 1962 and was selected Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges.
As a freshman, McDaniel scored 33 points to lead JCJC to an 87-83 over Perkinston in the South Division title game. The Bobcats would finish second in the state tournament.
After leaving Jones, McDaniel received a full basketball scholarship to Rice University in Houston, Texas. He would later receive his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi.
McDaniel returned to JCJC in 1967 as a fulltime instructor in health education. He established a recreation program providing extra-curricular activities, after school, for dorm students and started a summer recreation program for dorm students. He planned, organized and directed the intramural program at JCJC.
McDaniel coached youth baseball for six years in Laurel and Jones County. He also served as track coach at JCJC and organized and conducted Special Olympics for Ellisville State School during his tenure as track coach.
As JCJC’s recreation director, McDaniel distributed toys to needy children in the Jones County area and served as a deacon at West Ellisville Baptist Church.
He also served as “Voice of the Bobcats” broadcasting JCJC football on WBSJ-FM for 13 years.
McDaniel passed away in 1999 while still teaching at JCJC. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, and son, Chris, along with daughter-in-law, Jill, and grandson, Cambridge.
