Bryans shines as Bobcats run-rule Eagles, 8-0

POPLARVILLEBeau Bryans was in the zone for No. 8 Jones College in a win-or-go-home game here Wednesday night at Dub Herring Park.
 
Bryans allowed only one hit, struck out a career high 11 batters and retired the final 19 batters he faced as the Bobcats defeated No. 17 Meridian 8-0 in seven innings in the Region 23 Tournament.
 
The Bobcats will now face No. 1 East Central at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in an elimination game.
 
Jones (40-15) reached the 40-win plateau for the first time since 2017.
 
Bryans allowed a walk, single and hit a batter in the first inning as the Eagles loaded the bases with one out. But a fielder's choice and strikeout ended the threat. Meridian never had another baserunner.
 
Bryans pitched all 7.0 innings and is now 7-1. His 110 strikeouts is second-most in NJCAA Division II.
 
Jones quickly took the lead in the bottom of the first when Brady Thomas walked, Wade Fulton was hit by a pitch and Evan Rogers singled a run home. Gavin Brassfield followed with a two-run double and the Bobcats led 3-0.
 
In the second inning, Marquette Gibson led off with a walk, advanced to second and third on wild pitches and eventually scored on a double play groundout to make it 4-0.
 
In the sixth, Brassfield led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on Hays Carley's squeeze bunt to give Jones a 5-0 lead.
 
The Bobcats walked it off in the bottom of the seventh.
 
Gatlin Sanders doubled to left, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error. With the bases loaded and one out, Cole Manuel was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and Gibson followed with a walk to end it.
 
Rogers went 4-for-4 with four singles and an RBI. Brassfield doubled and singled and drove in two runs. Sanders had a double with Fulton and Gibson adding singles.
 
Caleb Hall, the first of five MCC pitchers, went 2.0 innings, allowed four runs, four hits, walked three and took the loss. He is now 8-4.
 
Rhett Ketchum singled for Meridian's only hit.
 
The Eagles (36-18) play host No. 2 Pearl River at noon Thursday in an elimination game. PRCC lost 11-3 to No. 3 LSU Eunice on Wednesday.
