Jones drops two tight contests at Meridian

MERIDIAN – No. 12 Jones was on the wrong end of a sweep Wednesday night at Scaggs Field.

The Bobcats were swept at Meridian, 8-7 and 6-4, and have lost 8 of 10 to the Eagles.

Jones fell to 33-11, 15-7 in the MACCC. Meridian improved to 28-16, 13-9 in the MACCC.

Jones will travel to Mississippi Delta for a 1 p.m. Friday doubleheader. The games were originally scheduled for Saturday.

Meridian 8, Jones 7

Jones wasted Austin Mills' leadoff triple in the top of the ninth and left the bases loaded before Meridian walked-off the Bobcats on a walk-off walk in the bottom half.

Brady Thomas, the former Eagle, hit a solo homer on the second pitch of the game to give Jones a fantastic start.

Marquette Gibson added his first homer of the season in the second to make it 2-0 Bobcats.

Chris Watson's two-run single tied the game at 2-2 for Meridian after three.

Gibson helped Jones retake the lead in the fourth on an RBI-double but the Eagles immediately responded with an RBI-double and two-run homer to lead 5-3.

Trailing 7-5 in the eighth, a pair of bases-loaded walks tied the game at 7-7.

Mills' triple and back-to-back intentional walks loaded the bases in the ninth for Jones with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.

Meridian then made Jones pay, walking off the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Mills and Hays Carley had three hits apiece in a 16-hit attack for Jones.

Collin Pipkins took the loss for Jones despite four innings of one-hit ball. His lone walk allowed scored the winning run.

Meridian 6, Jones 4

A three-run first and three-run fourth was all the Eagles needed to close out a sweep.

An RBI-triple, double and single gave Meridian a 3-0 lead after one.

Gatlin Sanders' RBI-double in the third and a wild pitch in the fourth cut the Eagle lead to 3-2.

Back-to-back RBI-singles in the bottom of the fourth extended the lead to 6-2.

Jones loaded the bases in the fifth with no outs and ended up plating two to make it 6-4 but wouldn't get any closer.

Trent Hillen was touched for six runs on eight hits in five innings to take his first loss of the year.
