ELLISVILLE – Jones opened MACCC play with a sweep over Holmes on Saturday afternoon at The Bank, winning the opener 10-1 thanks to seven Bulldog errors and using a two-run homer from
Evan Rogers in the nightcap to rally for a 6-3 come-from-behind victory.
Jones extended its win streak over Holmes to nine games and improved to 20-4 overall, 2-0 MACCC. Holmes dropped to 8-10, 0-2.
Up next is a doubleheader at Hinds on Wednesday, March 13.
Jones 10, Holmes 1
Three Bulldog errors in the first inning alone led to two Bobcat runs and Jones never trailed in a runaway victory.
Holmes cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning on Jacob Lott's RBI-single before Jones scored the game's final eight runs.
Hays Carley's bunt single helped plate two in the fourth for Jones after a throwing error by the catcher scored both
Brady Thomas and
Evan Rogers, making it 4-1.
After a sac fly from Rogers in the fifth made it 5-1, three more scored in the sixth. Five straight hits, including a
Jacob McCall double and three consecutive bunt singles and
Gatlin Sanders sac fly extended the lead to 8-1.
Austin Mills singled and scored in the eighth on a wild pitch and Rogers doubled to score
Marquette Gibson and cap the scoring.
Colton Hegwood was 3-for-5 in the leadoff spot to pace a 12-hit attack.
Eli Walker (3-0) scattered three hits, no earned runs, seven strikeouts and three walks for the win.
Aidan Bellman (0-3) was hit with the loss after allowing eight runs, four of them earned, and 10 hits over 7.0 innings.
Jones 6, Holmes 3
Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, Rogers and
Brady Thomas hit back-to-back homers to help Jones rally for a come-from-behind win to complete the two-game sweep.
Holmes grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on a pair of Bobcat errors and Hunter Azemar's RBI-double.
Sanders' RBI-groundout cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame, scoring Hegwood after his team-leading fourth triple to lead off the inning.
The teams traded single runs in the third.
After two, quick outs in the bottom of the fifth, Sanders walked and Rogers drilled a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left-center to make it 4-3 Jones. A batter later, after a pitching change, Thomas went deep to right to make it 5-3.
Jones added an insurance run in the sixth when Mills scored on a wild pitch.
Back-to-back walks in Holmes' half of the seventh put the tying run to the plate before a pitching change.
Thomas relieved
Micah Daniell and got two strikeouts and pop up to get his third save of the year.
Trent Hillen (3-0) punched out eight and allowed two earned runs in 5.0 innings.
Gibson and Thomas combined for four of the Bobcats' seven hits.
