ELLISVILLE –
Gabe Lacy (Gulfport) homered and three pitchers scattered eight hits to lead No. 2 Jones College past Holmes 12-2 in six innings in game two of a doubleheader here Tuesday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
In the opener, Holmes scored a run in the fourth inning and made it stand up as the Bulldogs beat the Bobcats, 1-0.
Jones, 18-2 overall and 3-1 in the MACJC, visits Northeast Mississippi for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
Holmes, 17-3 and 2-2, goes to Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday.
Bulldogs 1, No. 2 Bobcats 0
In the top of the fourth, Cole Johnson drew a one-out walk. With two outs, Johnson stole second and scored on a single by Jimmy Burse to account for the game's only run.
Jones starting pitcher
Cade Morgan (Grenada) pitched well, but took the tough-luck loss. He allowed one run, just three hits, walked one and struck out four. DJ Alexander (Gretna, Louisiana) pitched the ninth for the Bobcats, allowing one hit and posting two strikeouts.
Robbie Woody (Madison Central),
O'Neill Burgos (Brookhaven Academy) and
Trace Henry (Mooreville) each singled for Jones.
Starter Nate Oswalt went seven innings and got the win. He gave up no runs, three hits, walked two and struck out four. Steven Lacey pitched the final two innings and got the save. He gave up no runs, no hits, hit two, walked none and struck out none.
Burse, Johnson, Taj Porter and Hunter Dykes each singled for Holmes.
No. 2 Bobcats 12, Bulldogs 2

After being blanked in game one, Jones started quickly in game two.
Burgos and
Blake Johnson (Gulfport) drew walks and
Bailee Hendon (Vancleave) tripled to rightfield to score both runners.
The Bobcats made it 3-0 in the second when
Steven Sasser (South Jones) was hit by a pitch and Henry singled. Woody's ground out drove in Sasser.
The Bulldogs scored twice in the third, but Jones responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Burgos led off with a double, stole third and scored on a throwing error. Hendon singled and Lacy followed with a two-run blast to center to make it 6-2. Sasser was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, stole second and scored on a single by Henry.
Jones made it 9-2 in the fourth.
Hale led off with a walk, Burgos singled and Johnson followed with a double to right to score Hale. Hendon would walk to load the bases and with two outs, Sasser walked to force Burgos home.
In the bottom of the fifth, Woody led off with a single and Hale followed with a double. Woody would score on a passed ball. A Burgos ground out would score Hale.
Jones ended the game in the sixth when they never even hit the ball. Henry and Woody were hit by pitches. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch and Henry would score on a passed ball.
Starter
Cooper Brune (Ocean Springs) was credited with the win, improving to 2-0. He went two innings, allowed no runs, one hit, walked none and struck out four.
Payton Harris (Oak Grove) pitched two innings, allowed two runs (one earned) and five hits.
Hunter Eldridge (West Lauderdale) pitched two innings, allowed no runs, two hits and struck out four.
Hendon tripled and singled twice and Burgos doubled and singled for the Bobcats and Henry singled twice. Lacy homered, Hale and Johnson doubled and Woody had a single.
Anthony Fidanza doubled and singled and Jordan Szush singled twice for Holmes.
Starter Chris Guthrie – the first of five Holmes' pitchers – got the loss. He went .2 innings, allowed two runs, one hit and walked three.
