SCOOBA – A five-run first inning sparked No. 2 Jones County to a 12-6 win over East Mississippi here Saturday in the MACJC opener for both teams.
JCJC sent nine players to bat in the top of the first.
Robbie Woody (Madison Central) walked and
Trace Henry (Mooreville) reached on a bunt single. Woody would score on an error and
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) walked. Henry would later score on a passed ball and
Tate Pepper (Ocean Springs) drove in a run with a single. After
Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) walked,
Jake Mason's (West Lauderdale) single drove in Pepper. Hale eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Hale's solo home run in the third gave the Bobcats a 6-0 lead.
EMCC scored in the bottom of the fourth, but JCJC answered in the fifth when Woullard doubled, was sacrificed to third by
Luke Hudson (Presbyterian Christian School) and scored on an error.
The Lions made it 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bobcats came back with four runs in the top of the sixth.
R.J. Brown (Columbus, Georgia) led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on Woody's sacrifice fly. Woody reached on an error on the play. Henry drew a walk and Woullard followed with a two-run double. Pepper then singled Woullard home to make it 11-3.
EMCC scored a run in the seventh to make it 11-4.
In the ninth,
Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) homered for the Bobcats' final run.
The Lions scored twice in the bottom of the ninth.
Starter
Cooper Brune (Ocean Springs) got the win for Jones. He is 4-0 on the season.
He went five innings, allowed three runs, seven hits, walked one and struck out seven.
Will Hicks (Germantown) pitched three innings, allowed one run, two hits, walked one and struck out five.
Kyle Shepherd (Collegiate Christian) pitched .1 innings, allowed one run, two hits, walked three and struck out one.
Grayson Livingston (Wayne Academy) pitched .2 innings, allowed no runs, no hits, walked one and struck out one.
Matthews homered and singled for the Bobcats. Woullard doubled twice, Mason doubled and singled and Henry and Pepper each singled twice. Hale homered and Woody added a single.
JCJC is now 14-3 overall, 1-0 in the conference.
EMCC falls to 7-8 and 0-1.
