ELLISVILLE – Seventh-ranked Jones College won twice over Mississippi Delta here Saturday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
Jones pounded out 18 hits and eased to a 25-1, seven-inning victory in game one. In game two, a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth inning was the difference in a 4-3 victory.
Jones is now 21-8 overall, 4-2 in the MACCC.
The Bobcats will host Southwest in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, March 25.
Jones 25, MDCC 1 (7 inn.)
It was over quickly in game one.
After the first two Bobcats were retired in the bottom of the first inning, the next seven Jones players reached and five runs scored.
In the second inning, 12 batters went to the plate and the Bobcats scored six more runs to take an 11-0 lead. Jones would add three runs in the third, six in the fourth and five in the fifth to take care of business.
Brayson Graham (Wayne County) belted a home run, two singles and drove in two runs to pace the Bobcats.
Dylan Champagne (Prairieville, La.) and
Gage Reeves (George County) each doubled and singled and
Dakota Smith (West Jones) singled twice and drove in three runs.
Eli Wheat (Oak Grove) had two singles,
Collin Haney (Columbia) tripled,
Brady Smith (Florence) doubled and
Cam Keyes (Brandon),
Sanders Ainsworth (Madison Central),
Brayden Quick (Germantown),
Owen Bellanger (Gulfport) and
Cal Cassard (Watson, La.) added singles.
Chase Russell (Madison Central) pitched the first four innings and got his first win of the year, improving to 1-2. He allowed no runs, three hits, walked none and struck out five.
Reid Gaston (Brandon),
Russ Thompson (South Jones) and
Austin Rylee (Brookhaven) each pitched an inning to finish it up.
Jones 4, MDCC 3
It was a different type of game with the same outcome in game two.
Jones took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Russell walked, Champagne singled and Quick delivered an RBI-single.
The Bobcats went up 3-0 in the third when
Dakota Smith singled and was sacrificed to second by
Warren Hutchinson (Madison Central). With two outs, Ainsworth had an RBI-single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Champagne followed with an RBI-single.
The Trojans got a pair of singles and took advantage of two errors in the top of the fifth to score three runs and tie the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, Graham drew a one-out walk and Wheat got a two-out walk.
Dakota Smith's infield single loaded the bases and Hutchinson followed with a run-scoring walk to give the Bobcats the lead.
Trevor Hodges (Watson, La.) was perfect in the final two innings on the hill and got the win to improve to 5-0. He had three strikeouts.
Starter
Drew Lambert (MRA) went the first five innings, allowed three runs (one earned), four hits, walked two and struck out seven.
Champagne and
Dakota Smith each had two singles with Ainsworth, Quick and Graham adding singles.
