Jones run-rules Northeast to split a round robin in Scooba

SCOOBA – Jones closed out its non-conference slate in a round robin at East Mississippi on Wednesday, dropping the opening game to the host Lions, 4-1, before bouncing back with a 14-1 run-rule win over Northeast.

The Bobcats moved to 18-4 and will open MACCC play at home Saturday against Holmes. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at The Bank.

Tickets can be purchased in advance through jcbobcats.com/tickets for $7 online or $10 at the gate, cash only.

EMCC 4, Jones 1

The Lions' only hit of the game came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, a Zac Butler bases-clearing double, as EMCC stole a win late.

Beau Bryans struck out the first eight hitters he faced and closed with 10 in four innings in a no-decision.

Jones threatened in the first with the bases loaded and one out, but a double play ended it.

Marquette Gibson walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on Austin Mills' RBI-single to give Jones a 1-0 lead after two.

EMCC tied the game at 1-1 in the third.

Hugh LeMasters struck out but reached base on a passed ball, advanced to second on a passed ball, third on a groundout and then scored on a passed ball.

Micah Daniell (1-2) threw a scoreless fifth but ran into trouble in the sixth allowing a leadoff walk, hit-by-pitch and a two-out walk before Butler's RBI-double scored three for the eventual win.

Jones 14, Northeast 1 (5 inn.)

Jones sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth to blast the Tigers in five innings. The Bobcats scored eight runs in the inning before Northeast was able to record the first out.

Evan Rogers' sac fly gave Jones a 1-0 lead in the first but Northeast quickly tied it in the second on Kelly Crumpton's RBI-single.

A leadoff single for Hays Carley in the bottom of the second helped start a four-run frame. Mills followed with an RBI-double two batters later, two Bobcat runs scored on a throwing error and Gatlin Sanders added an RBI-single to make it 5-1.

The floodgates opened up in the fourth when the first 10 Bobcat batters reached base and eight runs came across to extend the lead to 13-1. Brady Thomas' sac fly capped the scoring.

Charlee Strickland tossed a scoreless fifth in relief of Andrew Marble (3-1) who tossed 4.0 innings of four-hit ball and allowed one run.

Carley and Sanders had two hits apiece and Gibson added a pair of RBIs.
