ELLISVILLE – Through nine games, unranked Jones College is still unbeaten.
The Bobcats swept a three-game series over No. 19 Shelton State Thursday and Friday at Community Bank Park, with all three games decided by one run.
Jones won Thursday night's game on
Colton Hegwood's walk-off single, 4-3, Friday's first game 6-5 in 12 innings on
Wade Fulton's walk-off single and the finale, 6-5.
Jones' 9-0 start is the best since 2019.
Jones 4, Shelton State 3
Jones blew a 3-0 lead in the eighth, but a single, sac bunt and Hegwood single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Bobcats to a series-opening win.
Jones led 1-0 in the bottom of the first after two pitches, with Hegwood hitting a double down the line in right and
Gatlin Sanders an RBI-single up the middle.
Trent Hillen hung five zeros in a no-decision to preserve a one-run lead into the sixth.
Still just a 1-0 Bobcat lead in the seventh, a wild pitch and
Brady Thomas sac fly extended the lead to 3-0.
A walk and hit-by-pitch from reliever
Brandon Rhodes to start the eighth put the tying run at the plate.
Wesley Helms doubled to score one and Kyle Morrison doubled to score two and tie the game at 3-3 before
Brady Smith came on and got two strikeouts.
After Shelton went 1-2-3 in the ninth,
Cole Manuel singled to put the winning run on.
Randall Futral then laid down a sac bunt and Hegwood singled to win it.
Hegwood finished 3-for-5 to lead the Bobcat offense.
Smith got the win in 1.2 relief to improve to 2-0. He allowed one hit with three strikeouts.
JM Pickens took the loss for the Bucs after allowing the go-ahead run.
Jones 6, Shelton State 5 (12 inn.)
After falling behind 5-4 in the ninth, a Sanders double forced extra innings and Fulton RBI-single won it in the 12th for Jones, 6-5.
Jones led 2-0 after two on
Evan Rogers' sac fly and Hegwood's infield single.
The Bucs got a run back in the fourth on a sac fly and briefly took the lead, 3-2, in the top of the seventh.
After a
Jacob McCall single and Thomas walk, Rogers doubled to right to put Jones back on top, 4-3, after seven.
Shelton State put together a two-out rally in the ninth to once again take a brief lead.
Back-to-back singles and an infield error made it 5-4 Bucs into the bottom of the ninth.
Manuel's pinch-hit single put the tying run on and Sanders would score him on an RBI-double.
Scoreless in the 10th and 11th, Jones walked it off in the 12th.
Fulton's two-out, RBI-single through the right side scored
Marquette Gibson for the win.
Eli Walker and
Micah Daniell allowed four hits, an earned run and struck out nine through the first six innings.
Collin Pipkins got the win in two scoreless innings.
Jones 6, Shelton State 5
Jones nearly blew a 6-1 lead in the seventh, but got a
Connor Brooks strikeout to close out the three-game sweep.
The Bucs led 1-0 after three on Lawson Neel's solo shot to left.
A four-run bottom of the fourth broke the game open for Jones. Four singles in the inning, a Buc error and two wild pitches helped the cause.
Thomas scored on a three-base throwing error from first to tie it. Manuel's RBI-single and
Austin Mills' two-RBI single made it 4-1 Bobcats.
Rogers' RBI-double scored Thomas and Rogers would score off a wild pitch to make it 6-1 Jones after five.
A shaky top of the seventh for
Jake Shelby started with a walk and a single before back-to-back strikeouts. Trenton Shirley then hit a two-out, inside-the-park home run off the wall in left to cut it to 6-4 and another RBI-single made it 6-5.
Brooks came in for Shelby with two on and two outs and got Hayes Alford looking for the save and to win it for Jones.
Andrew Marble went 6.0 innings, scattering two hits, one run, four walks and three strikeouts.
Jones resumes a 10-game homestand Tuesday with Coastal Alabama-North.
