Jones sweeps doubleheader at Nunez to open the season

Bobcats now 7-0 all-time against the Pels

CHALMETTE, La. – Bobcat pitching hung zeros in 14 of 16 innings and Hays Carley led the offense with four hits as Jones swept Nunez in a doubleheader Saturday at Noel Suarez Stadium to open the 2024 season.

Jones improved to 2-0 and dropped Nunez to 0-2. The Bobcats also moved to 7-0 all-time against the Pelicans.

The Bobcats host Southwest Tennessee for a four-game set starting Friday, Feb. 2 to open a 10-game homestand at Community Bank Park.

Jones 5, Nunez 2

Nunez plated a pair of runs in the first on an error and fielder's choice, but Bobcat pitching would not allow another run the final six frames.

Evan Rogers' RBI-double and Cole Manuel's two-run single in the second gave Jones its first lead, 3-2. They would ride that to a season-opening win.

Carley's infield single plated Colton Hegwood and Rogers' sac fly scored Gatlin Sanders to make it 5-2 Bobcats in the third.

Neither team scored the final four innings.

Beau Bryans got the win in his first career start, allowing two hits and one earned run with five strikeouts in a planned three innings. Andrew Marble tossed four shutout frames to get the save, striking out seven and allowing three hits.

Landon Cortez allowed five runs on five hits in five innings to take the loss.

Both teams finished with five hits.

Jones 7, Nunez 2

Nicholls State transfer Trent Hillen scattered two runs on two hits in 4.1 innings in his first Jones start and the Bobcat offense pounded out 13 hits to close out the sweep.

Jones plated three runs in each of the third and fifth innings to build a big lead.

Carley singled to close out the scoring in the third and finished 3-for-4 for the game. Braden Smith's two-run single made it 6-0.

An RBI-groundout and error allowed the Pelicans to get two back in the fifth and close to 6-2.

Eli Walker, who got the win in 2.2 innings of relief, Brice Deaton and Connor Brooks combined for 4.2 scoreless to end the game.

Rogers' sac fly in the ninth scored pinch-runner Randall Futral to cap the scoring at 7-2.

Behind Carley's three hits, Josh King also had three in his Bobcat debut behind the dish.
