Bobcats drop pair to East Mississippi

ELLISVILLE – It was a long day for the Jones College Bobcats here Saturday at Community Bank Park.
 
East Mississippi swept the Bobcats, winning 11-2 in seven innings in game one and posting an 11-1 victory in game two.
 
Jones is now 26-14 overall and 13-11 in the MACCC. The Bobcats visit Hinds for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday and end regular season play with a 2 p.m. home doubleheader on Friday vs. Holmes.
 
East Mississippi, 22-15 overall and 17-7 in the conference, hosts Mississippi Delta on Tuesday.
 
East Mississippi 11, Jones 2 – 7 inn.
 
Trailing 1-0, the Bobcats took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
 
Jakob Wax (Prairieville, Louisiana) and Andrew Jones (Brandon) were both hit by pitches and advanced a base on a wild pitch. Chase Honeycutt (DeSoto Central) drove in Wax with a sacrifice fly to center field and Murray Hutchinson's (Madison Central) infield single drove in Jones.
 
EMCC tied it up in the third and then sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. The Lions added three more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.
 
Hutchinson had two singles to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Tyler Ducksworth (South Jones) and Jones added singles.
 
Starter Peyton Bell (Mobile, Alabama) went 3.0 innings and was charged with the loss. He allowed five runs, seven hits, walked one and struck out two to fall to 3-2. Kace Matthews (West Jones) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up four runs, four hits, three walks and recorded three strikeouts. Joshua Sullivan (Brandon) pitched .1 innings, giving up two runs, no hits, two walks and had a strikeout. Sam Mansell (Northeast Jones) tossed .2 innings, allowed no hits and issued a walk.
 
Kylan Stepter went 7.0 innings for the Lions and got the win, improving to 4-2. He allowed two runs (none earned), four hits, walked three and struck out two.
 
Cody Holmes and Hunter French each doubled and singled for EMCC with Blayze Berry and Beau Bates adding two singles each. Ethan Medlin, Wesley Sides and Kade Shannon added singles. Berry had three RBIs.

The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the first when DeeJay Booth (Oak Grove) walked and later scored when Colson Harris (West Jones) reached on an error. 
 
The Lions tied it at 1-1 in the third without getting a hit. Austin Garrison was hit by a pitch and with two outs, Medlin reached on a two-base throwing error. Garrison would score on a wild pitch.
 
With the bases empty and two outs in the fifth, the Lions had six consecutive batters reach and scored six runs to take a 7-1 lead. French walked, Medlin singled, Sides and Holmes followed with RBI singles, Berry had a run-scoring double and Trey Trosclair homered over the left field wall to cap the inning.
 
EMCC scored four more runs in the seventh on just one hit - a Berry single. There were five walks – including three in a row with the bases loaded – and a hit batsman in the inning.
 
Ducksworth and Drew Williamson (Vancleave) had two singles each for Jones with Josh Cary adding a single.
 
Andrew Nix (Stringer) got the start and took the loss to fall to 3-3. He pitched 4.2 innings, allowed six runs (five earned), six hits, walked one and struck out four. Drew Druckenmiller (Mobile, Alabama) went 1.1 innings, allowed one run, two hits and struck out one. Baylor Ormes (Gulfport) tossed .1 innings, gave up four runs, one hit and walked two. Cade Mattison (Lamar Christian) pitched to two batters and walked both of them. Luke Lycette (Northwest Rankin) pitched the final .2 innings and walked one.
 
Berry went all 7.0 innings and got the win, upping his record to 4-1. He gave up one run (unearned), five hits, walked one and struck out five.
 
Berry doubled and singled with Medlin and Shannon getting two singles each. Trosclair homered and Sides and Holmes added singles.
