GOODMAN – Home runs by
Hudson Harris (West Jones) and
R.J. Brown (Columbus, Georgia) sparked No. 2 Jones County to an 8-3 victory over Holmes in game two of a doubleheader here Wednesday afternoon at Charlie Donald Field.
The Bobcats won the opener, 12-2 in six innings.
Jones has now won 18 straight games to improve to 37-7 overall and 22-4 in the MACJC.
The "magic number" for JCJC to be MACJC regular season champion and top-seed going into postseason play is one. The Bobcats need to win one game Saturday at Meridian or Pearl River must lose one game at Coahoma. The Wildcats are currently 21-5 in the league, but JCJC owns the tiebreaker because they swept the Wildcats on April 24.
The Bobcats trailed 2-0 entering the third inning before taking a 4-2 lead, capped by a two-run home run by Harris. Brown added a two-run home run in the fourth.
Harris also had a single.
Jake Mason (West Lauderdale) and
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) added doubles with
Trace Henry (Mooreville),
Robbie Woody (Madison Central),
Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) and
Miguel Morgan (South Jones) getting singles.
Tyler Spring (Stone) went the first six innings and got the win. He allowed three runs, four hits, walked three and struck out nine. Spring is now 8-1 on the season.
Bryce Fagan (Petal) pitched a perfect seventh inning and had two strikeouts.
Jimmy Burse homered for Holmes.
Starter Jeff Crenshaw got the loss. He went 3.1 innings, allowed seven runs, seven hits, walked four and struck out four.
Holmes led 2-0 after one. The Bobcats led 4-2 after three and 7-3 after four.
The Bobcats end regular season play with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Meridian.
The season is over for Holmes. The Bulldogs end the year at 17-26 overall and 4-24 in the MACJC.
