ELLISVILLE – No. 3 Jones County stayed alive in its best-of-3 playoff series here Friday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
Will Freeman (Semmes, Alabama) was solid on the mound and JCJC racked up 13 hits as they beat the Eagles, 11-1 in six innings.
The win evened up the series at 1-1. Hinds won 7-4 on Thursday night.
Freeman pitched all six innings and got the win. He allowed one run, five hits, walked none and struck out six. The Alabama signee is 8-2 on the season.
JCJC went ahead 1-0 in the second when
Jake Mason (West Lauderdale) doubled to right-center, was sacrificed to third by
Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) and scored on a single to right by
Stephen Matthews (Tupelo).
The Bobcats made it 6-0 in the third.
Trace Henry (Mooreville) led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a single to center by
Robbie Woody (Madison Central).
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) doubled to left to drive in Woody and Mason followed with an RBI single to score Woullard to make it 4-0.
With two outs, Matthews tripled into the rightfield corner to score Matthews and
Miguel Morgan (South Jones) doubled into the leftfield corner to score Matthews.
Jones made it 7-0 in the seventh when Matthews singled to center, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Morgan.
Hinds scored its run in the sixth on a home run to center by Ian Ladner.
The Bobcats ended it in the bottom of the sixth.
Woullard led off with a double to left and Mason reached on a fielder's choice when the Eagles failed to make the play after getting Woullard in a rundown between second and third. After a groundout by Hale,
Tate Pepper (Ocean Springs) reached on a fielder's choice when Woullard was thrown out at home.
Matthews drew a walk to load the bases and Morgan drew a walk to force Mason home.
R.J. Brown (Columbus, Georgia) then doubled into the leftfield corner to clear the bases and end the game.
Matthews tripled, singled twice and drove in two runs. Morgan doubled, singled twice and drove in three runs. Woullard doubled twice and Mason doubled and singled. Brown had a double and three RBIs with Henry and Woody getting singles.
Jovante Dorris singled twice for Hinds, while Ladner homered. Andrew Beesley and Caleb Danzy added singles.
JP Elkins, the starter, went two-plus innings and got the loss. He allowed four runs, five hits, walked one and struck out one. Carson Stinnett pitched 2.2 innings, allowed three runs, six hits and struck out one. Chad Butcher pitched an inning, allowed four runs, one hit and walked four. Luke Files pitched to one batter and gave up a hit.
JCJC is now 38-10, while Hinds is 27-17 going into the deciding game of the series.
