ELLISVILLE – The No. 3 Jones County Junior College Bobcats will have to win twice on Friday in order to extend its season.
The Hinds Eagles used a four-run sixth inning and went on beat JCJC 7-4 in game one of a best-of-three playoff series here Thursday evening at Community Bank Park.
Game two of the series will be at 1 p.m. on Friday. A third game, if necessary, would follow 30 minutes after game two.
JCJC is now 37-10 on the season. The Bobcats have lost three straight games.
Hinds is now 27-18 and is 3-0 vs. JCJC on the season.
The Bobcats got on the scoreboard first.
Robbie Woody (Madison Central) reached on infield hit, took second on a throwing error and scored on a single to right by
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville).
Hinds tied it in the fourth when Caleb Danzy walked and Carson Klepzig was hit by a pitch. Nathan Babb then reached on an error that allowed Danzy to score.
JCJC took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth when
Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) walked, stole second and third and scored on an error.
The Eagles would take the lead for good with two runs in the fifth.
Andrew Beesley singled and with two outs, Staton Todd doubled to right-center to score Beesley. Danzy followed with an RBI double to center to score Todd and give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
In the sixth, Babb and J.P. Elkins both drew one out walks. Jovante Dorris then reached on a fielder's choice that forced Elkins at second base. The relay throw to first base was wide and Babb scored on the error.
Beesley then homered over the right-center field wall to give Hinds a 6-2 lead. Ian Ladner followed with a double to the wall in center and Todd reached on an infield hit and an error allowed Ladner to score on the play.
The Bobcats closed the gap with a two-out rally in the seventh.
R.J. Brown (Columbus, Georgia) reached on an infield hit and
Trace Henry (Mooreville) was hit by a pitcher. Woody reached on an infield hit and a throwing error on the same play allowed Brown and Henry to score.
The Bobcats got a leadoff single in the ninth from
Stephen Matthews (Tupelo), but a 5-4-3 double play cleared the bases. With two outs, Brown reached on an error, but a groundout ended the game.
Matthews and Woody had two singles each for Jones, while Woullard and Brown each one single.
Tyler Spring (Stone) went 5.1 innings and took the loss, falling to 8-2. He allowed four runs (two earned), six hits, walked four and struck out six. Jay Harris (Oak Grove) pitched 1.2 innings, allowed three runs (two earned), four hits and struck out three.
Bryce Fagan (Petal) pitched 2.0 innings, allowed no runs, two hits, walked one and struck out three.
Caleb Morgan went 6.2 innings and got the win, improving to 4-2. He allowed four runs (one earned), five hits, walked three and struck out nine. Patrick Hodges went 2.1 innings, allowed no runs, one hit, walked none and struck out one.
Beesley homered and singled twice, while Todd doubled and singled twice for Hinds. Klepzig doubled and singled and Dorris singled twice. Ladner and Danzy added doubles.
