FULTON –
Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and lift No. 12 Jones County to a 3-1 victory over No. 11 Itawamba in game two of a doubleheader.
The Bobcats won the opener 6-2 here at Roy Cresap Field.
With one out in the top of the seventh,
Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) drew a walk and
Hudson Harris (West Jones) doubled to center. Matthews then lined a double to left to score Hale and pinch-runner
Jacob Vick (East Central) and give Jones the lead.
Justin Medlin singled to start the bottom of the seventh.
But
Cooper Brune (Ocean Springs) got a groundout and a double play to end the game.
JCJC had taken a 1-0 lead in the first when
Robbie Woody (Madison Central) walked, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a single by
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville).
ICC tied it in the second when Hayden Palmer led off with a home run.
Starter
Jay Simpson (Presbyterian Christian School) went 5.1 innings, allowed one run, six hits, walked one and struck out three. Brune, 7-0, pitched the final 1.2 innings and got the win. He gave up no runs, one hit and struck out one.
Harris doubled and singled for the Bobcats. Matthews doubled with
Trace Henry (Mooreville), Woody and Woullard adding singles.
Houston Harding went the distance for ICC and took the loss. He allowed three runs (two earned), six hits, walked three and struck out five.
Hunter Nabors doubled and singled and Jacob Hall had two singles for ICC. Palmer homered with Connor Lewis and Medlin adding singles.
The Bobcats, 23-7 overall and 10-4 in the MACJC, travel to Copiah-Lincoln for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
Itawamba, 20-8 and 6-6, goes to Northwest on Tuesday.
