Will Hicks (Germantown) and relievers
Payton Harris (Oak Grove) and
Bryce Fagan (Petal) combined on a two-hitter as No. 12 Jones County defeated No. 11 Itawamba 6-2 in game one of a doubleheader here Sunday afternoon at Roy Cresap Field.
The game was scoreless until JCJC broke through with five runs in the third inning.
Tate Pepper (Ocean Springs) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and
Cooper Brune (Ocean Springs) reached on a bunt single.
Trace Henry (Mooreville) then tripled to center to make it 2-0.
With one out,
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) singled a run home. Woullard would then steal second and third and would score on a
Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) single. Hale would steal second and score on a single by
Luke Hudson (Presbyterian Christian School).
ICC made it 5-2 in the fourth.
Drew Thomas led off with a single and Justin Medlin reached on a fielder's choice. Hunter Nabors drew a walk. With two outs, Drake Wallace reached on an error, which allowed two runs to score.
Woullard then hit a solo home run in the sixth to close the scoring.
Hicks, making his first start of the season, got the win. He went five innings, allowed two runs (none earned), two hits, walked none and struck out four. He is now 1-2 on the year. Harris pitched two innings and did not allow a hit and Fagan pitched the final two innings, allowing no hits and getting a strikeout.
Woullard homered and singled for JCJC. Henry tripled and Hale, Hudson and Brune added singles.
Connor Lewis and Thomas singled for ICC's only hits.
Medlin, the starter, pitched 2.2 innings and took the loss. He allowed five runs, five hits, walked one and struck out four. Sam Harrington pitched the final 6.1 innings, allowed one run, one hit, walked two and struck out three.
JCJC is now 22-7 overall and 9-4 in the MACJC.
Itawamba falls to 20-7 and 6-5.
