PERKINSTON – No. 5 Jones County broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth inning and beat Mississippi Gulf Coast 4-2 in game one here Wednesday afternoon at Ken "Curly" Farris Field.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Isaac Williams singled and scored on a Dylan Menhennett double.
JCJC tied the game at 1-1 in the second when
Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) singled and would score on an errant pickoff throw.
It stayed that way until the top of the eighth.
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) reached on an error,
Jake Mason (West Lauderdale) singled and Hale walked to load the bases.
Tate Pepper's (Ocean Springs) sacrifice to right drove in Woullard to give Jones a 2-1 lead.
Alden Davis then led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run over the leftfield wall to tie the game at 2-2.
In the top of the ninth,
Miguel Morgan (South Jones) was hit by a pitch and was replaced by pinch-runner
Jacob Vick (East Central).
Trace Henry (Mooreville) then doubled to center to score Vick and
Robbie Woody (Madison Central) drew a walk. Woullard then hit into a fielder's choice and Henry scored all the way from second base.
Cooper Brune (Ocean Springs) retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth and got the victory. Brune, 9-0, went the final two innings, allowed one run, two hits and struck out three. Starter
Will Freeman (Semmes, Alabama) went seven innings, allowed one run, seven hits, walked one and struck out nine.
Henry doubled and singled and Pepper singled twice for the Bobcats. Woody, Mason, Hale and
Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) added singles.
Josh Lewis went eight innings for the Bulldogs, allowed two runs (one earned), eight hits, walked six and struck out none. Bailey Hargraves pitched .1 inning and got the loss. He allowed two runs (one earned), one hit and walked one. Kole Kittrell went .2 innings, allowed a walk and got a strikeout.
Menhennett doubled and singled and Williams had two singles for the Bulldogs. Davis homered with Castor Lee and Cullan O'Shea adding doubles. Logan McGrew and Preston Stringer had singles.
The Bobcats are now 28-7 overall and 13-4 in the MACJC.
The Bulldogs are 25-10 and 9-8.
