ELLISVILLE – No. 1 Jones County jumped out to a 4-0, first-inning lead and held on for a 6-5 victory over Baton Rouge Community College (Louisiana) in game one here Wednesday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
JCJC got rolling quickly when
Trace Henry (Mooreville) walked,
Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) singled and
Luther Woullard (D'Ibervlle) walked to load the bases.
Luke Hudson (Presbyterian Christian School) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left.
With two outs,
Jake Mason (West Lauderdale) delivered a two-run single and
Luke McKenzie (Columbia Academy) followed with an RBI double.
BRCC made it 4-1 in the third when Seth Daugherty, Kolby Blanchard and Garrett Barrilleaux singled with one out to load the bases. Hunter David reached on an error, which allowed a run to score, but Brune got a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, Woullard led off with a double and Hudson followed with an RBI double.
The Bears pulled within 5-3 in the sixth when Cameron Crawford singled and Jonah Overland followed with a two-run home run.
Jones got a run in the seventh when Henry singled and scored on a double to left by Woullard.
BRCC scored twice in the eighth.
Lee Whitaker singled and was replaced by pinchrunner Alex Courtier, who took second on a fielder's choice. Overland followed with an RBI single. Michael Smith and Samuel Jarrell followed with walks to load the bases and Daugherty was then hit by a pitch to force in a run.
But reliever
Bryce Fagan (Petal) got a strikeout to end the inning.
BRCC got the first two runners on base in the ninth on a single and a hit batsman, but Fagan got a double play and flyout to end the game and record his third save.
Starter
Will Freeman (Semmes, Alabama) went six innings and got the win, improving to 3-0. He gave up three runs (two earned), seven hits, walked none and struck out seven.
Payton Harris (Oak Grove) went 1.2 innings, allowed two earned runs, two hits, walked two and struck out two. Fagan went 1.1 innings, allowed no runs, one hit and struck out one.
Woullard had two doubles and Mason added two singles. Hudson and McKenzie doubled with Henry, Matthews and
R.J. Brown (Columbus, Georgia) getting singles.
Overland homered and singled twice for the Bears. Blanchard and Barrilleaux added two singles each. Daugherty, Whitaker and Crawford had singles.
Starter Brooks Southall went seven innings and was charged with the loss. He allowed six runs, nine hits, walked four and struck out three. Braxton Dufrene tossed an inning, allowed no hits and struck out two.
JCJC is now 12-1 and BRCC drops to 5-16.
