ELLISVILLE – Starting pitcher
Cooper Brune (Ocean Springs) had 10 strikeouts in five innings to help No. 1 Jones County to a 7-5 victory over Baton Rouge Community College (Louisiana) here Wednesday evening in game two of a doubleheader.
The Bobcats won the opener, 6-5.
JCJC, 13-1, travels to Eunice, Louisiana, on Saturday where they will play Murray State (Oklahoma) and No. 2 LSU-Eunice.
Baton Rouge, 5-17, meets South Suburban College (Illinois) in Vinton, Louisiana, on Thursday.
BRCC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second of game twon when Cameron Crawford singled, stole second and scored on a single by Samuel Jarrell.
The Bobcats came back to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second.
Luke Hudson (Presbyterian Christian School),
Jake Mason (West Lauderdale) and
Hudson Harris (West Jones) walked to load the bases.
Miguel Morgan (South Jones) came through with a two-run single and Harris would later score on a passed ball.
Jones went ahead 4-1 in the third when
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) walked, stole second and third and scored on a groundout by Mason.
BRCC cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth when Hunter David singled, Crawford doubled and Hosey Rogers followed with a two-run single.
JCJC increased the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth.
Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by Morgan.
R.J. Brown's (Columbus, Georgia) single scored Hale. With two outs,
Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) walked and Woullard followed with a two-run double to center.
In the top of the seventh, Kolby Blanchard reached on an error to start the inning and Jonah Overland singled. Lee Whitaker's sacrifice fly scored Blanchard and Garrett Barrilleaux was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, David reached on an error, allowing Blanchard to score.
But
Luke McKenzie (Columbia Academy) got a groundout to end the game.
Brune allowed three runs and six hits as he upped his record to 3-0.
D.J. Alexander (Gretna, Louisiana) pitched an inning, allowed two hits and struck out two. McKenzie pitched an inning, allowed two runs (none earned) and one hit.
Bobcat pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and no walks.
Hale, Mason and Woullard doubled with Morgan and Brown adding singles.
Crawford doubled and singled for the Bears with David and Jarrell getting two singles each. Tyler Caston, Rogers and Overland added singles.
Vincent Laurent started for BRCC, lasted one inning, allowed three runs (two earned), no hits, walked three and took the loss. Joseph Battaglia went 4.2 innings, allowed four runs, four hits, walked four and struck out two. Connor Tregre went .1 innings, allowed no runs, one hit and walked one.
