Brune, Matthews key No. 9 Bobcats past Northeast

ELLISVILLE – Cooper Brune (Ocean Springs) improved to 6-0 and Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) belted a three-run home run to lead No. 9 Jones County to a 13-3, five-inning win over Northeast Mississippi in game one of a doubleheader here Friday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
Brune allowed only two hits – a solo home run to Jacob Wilcher in the first and a two-run homer to Parker Haberstroh in the fifth. He finished with seven strikeouts and walked two.
Jones took control with a four-run second inning.
Jake Mason (West Lauderdale) led off with a single and Luke Hudson (Presbyterian Christian School) doubled. Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) followed with an RBI single and Matthews walked to load the bases.
Tate Pepper (Ocean Springs) then hit a two-run single to right to make it 3-1. R.J. Brown's (Columbus, Georgia) fielder's choice drove in Matthews.
In the third, Hudson reached on a dropped third strike, Hale walked and Matthews hit an RBI double to left. Pepper followed with an RBI single to left, giving the Bobcats a 6-1 lead.
The Bobcats sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the fourth.
Travis Henry (Mooreville) led off with a bunt single, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Robbie Woody (Madison Central) sacrifice fly to center. Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) singled and Mason followed with an RBI double. Hudson walked and Hale delivered an RBI single.
Matthews then followed with a three-run home run to left to make it 12-1.
Next, Pepper drew a walk, Henry singled and Pepper would score on an error.
Matthews homered, doubled and drove in four runs. Mason doubled and singled and Pepper singled twice and drove in three runs. Hale and Henry each singled twice, while Hudson doubled and Woullard singled.
Tyler Samaniego, the first of four Northeast pitchers, lasted 1.1 innings and got the loss.
JCJC is now 19-6 overall, 6-3 in the MACJC.
Northeast drops to 13-11 and 4-5.
