ELLISVILLE – Third-ranked Jones County overcame a 4-0 deficit with six runs in the third inning and went on to defeat Northwest 7-5 in game two of a doubleheader here Saturday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
The Bobcats won the opener, 6-1.
JCJC, 17-5 overall and 4-2 in the MACJC, hosts East Central in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday. The games will air on
www.jcjc.tv.
Northwest, 12-8 and 2-4, goes to Holmes on Tuesday.
JCJC was down 4-0 entering the bottom of the third, but sent nine batters to the plate and scored six runs – all occurring with two outs.
With one out, Lutheer Woullard (D'Iberville) tripled off the wall in leftfield. After a strikeout, Woullard would score on a passed ball.
Luke Hudson (Presbyterian Christian School) drew a walk and
Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) followed with an RBI double to left to make it 4-2.
Hudson Harris (West Jones) and
Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) walked to load the bases.
Robbie Woody (Madison Central) then hit a ground ball back to pitcher Nathan Harrison. Harrison elected to throw the ball to catcher Hunter White for the force. But Harrison's throw went past White, allowing Hale and Harris to score and tie the game at 4-4. Matthews ended up at third and Woody went to second.
R.J. Brown (Columbus, Georgia) then hit a shallow pop up on the infield. Third baseman Justin Milam dove to try and make the catch, but was unable to do so. The two-run, infield single gave the Bobcats a 6-4 lead.
The Bobcats added another run in the fourth when Woullard doubled and scored on Hudson's single.
The Rangers had taken a 2-0 lead in the second when Brant Blaylock and Will Brooks singled and White delivered a two-run single.
Northwest made it 4-0 in the third. Milam walked and was sacrificed to second by Tanner Leggett.Hayden Leatherwood singled to left and Milam would score on a fielding error. Ben Van Cleve was hit by a pitch and Blaylock followed with an RBI single.
Starter
Jay Simpson (Presbyterian Christian School) went six innings and got the win. He allowed four runs (two earned), five hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Simpson is now 4-1 on the season.
Will Freeman (Semmes, Alabama) pitched the final inning and got his second save. He gave up one run, one hit, walked one and struck out three.
Woullard tripled and doubled, while Hale doubled for the Bobcats. Hudson and Brown had singles.
Dakota Dailey doubled and singled for the Rangers with Blaylock getting two singles. Brooks and White added singles.
Harrison went the final 3.1 innings and got the loss. He gave up three runs (one earned), three hits, walked one and struck out one. Starter Ian Hawkins pitched 2.2 innings, gave up four runs (three earned), two hits, walked six and struck out two.
