ELLISVILLE –  Starter Cooper Brune (Ocean Springs) allowed just one hit over seven innings as No. 3 Jones County beat Northwest 6-1 in game one of a doubleheader here Saturday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
Brune struck out three and walked four as upped his record to 5-0.
JCJC got all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first inning.
Trace Henry (Mooreville) led off with a double and Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) singled. Jake Mason (West Lauderdale) followed with a two-run double. After a sacrifice by Luke Hudson (Presbyterian Christian School), Brandon Hale (Pontotoc) followed with an RBI single.
Jones made it 4-0 in the second when Henry singled, Woullard walked and Mason came through again with an RBI single.
In the sixth, Tate Pepper (Ocean Springs) singled and went to third on a single by Henry. Woullard then doubled to right score both runners.
The Rangers avoided the shutout in the ninth.
Hayden Leatherwood walked, Brant Blaylock reached on an error and Will Brooks walked to load the bases. Tanner Booth would then single to left score the run.
D.J. Henry (Gretna, Louisiana) pitched the final two innings for Jones, allowing an unearned run, two hits and two walks.
Henry and Mason each had two singles and a double, while Woullard and Hale both doubled and singled. Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) had two singles with Pepper adding a single.
Leggett doubled for the Rangers with Brooks Boolos and Booth adding singles.
Kyle Moore, 1-1, went the first six innings and got the loss. He gave up six runs, 12 hits, walked one and struck out four. Daniel Shelton pitched the final two innings, allowed no run, one hit and struck out one.
JCJC is now 16-5 overall and 3-2 in the MACJC.
The Rangers fall to 12-7 and 2-3.
