EUNICE, Louisiana – No. 2 LSU-Eunice scored three runs on one hit in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally from a 2-0 deficit and defeat No. 1 Jones County 3-2 here Friday at Bengal Field.
It was heartbreaker for the Bobcats vs. the Bengals.
Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the eighth, Chance Clark led off with a single – only LSU-Eunice's second hit of the game – and stole second. He then took third on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Brent Hebert walked. Hebert stole second and Clark scored on an error on the same play.
Mason Templet then drew a walk. Hebert and Templet then executed a double steal to put runners at second and third with one out. Jacob Spell followed with an RBI ground out to tie the game at 2-2.
After an intentional walk to Cameron Horton, Hayden Mixon drew a walk to load the bases.
Templet then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
In the top of the ninth,
Miguel Morgan (South Jones) drew a one-out walk and
Trace Henry (Mooreville) drew a two-out walk.
But a fly out to centerfield ended the game.
The Bobcats had taken a 1-0 lead in the third when Henry walked, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville).
JCJC took a 2-0 lead in the eighth.
Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) walked, stole second and was sacrificed to third by Henry. After a walk to
Brandon Hale (Pontotoc), Woullard came through with an RBI single.
JCJC starter
Tyler Spring (Stone) pitched seven innings, allowed no runs, one hit, walked five and struck out seven. Reliever
Luke McKenzie (Columbia Academy) was tagged with the loss. He went .1 inning, allowed three runs, one hit, walked two and struck out one.
Bryce Fagan (Petal) pitched .2 inning and walked two.
Woullard and
Hudson Harris (West Jones) singled for JCJC's only hits.
Bengal starter Zach Hester went seven innings, allowed one run (unearned), one hit, walked three and struck out 10. Austin Bradford pitched .1 inning, allowed one run, one hit and walked two. Justin Barton got the win. He pitched .2 inning, allowed no runs and no hits. Landon Clifton got the save. He pitched the final inning and walked two.
Clark and Tristan Welch singled for LSU-Eunice's only two hits.
JCJC, 13-3, will begin MACJC play with a 2 p.m doubleheader on March 17 at East Mississippi.
LSU-Eunice, 18-3, will host Murray St. (Oklahoma) on Saturday and Sunday.
