ELLISVILLE –
Jay Simpson (Presbyterian Christian School) and
Bryce Fagan (Petal) were exceptional Friday afternoon.
The two righthanders combined on a 1-hit shutout as top-ranked (Division II) Jones County blanked No. 5 (Division I) Dyersburg St. (Tennessee), 3-0.
Simpson went 5.2 innings, allowing just a leadoff single to Hagan Severance in the fourth inning. He walked four, hit one and struck out three as he improved to 1-0. Fagan retired all four batters he faced and notched his first save.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of third.
Luke McKenzie (Columbia Academy) led off the inning with a home run over the centerfield wall and
Miguel Morgan (South Jones) followed on the next pitch with a home run to left-center.
With two outs in the inning,
Trace Henry (Mooreville) reached on an infield single and
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) followed with an RBI double.
All of JCJC's hits in the game came in the third inning.
Dyersburg St. starter Tristan Dobbs went two-plus innings and took the loss, allowing two runs, two hits and notching two strikeouts. Bryce O'Brien went the final four innings, allowed one run, two hits and struck out three.
