ELLISVILLE – Top-rated Jones County Junior College opened the 2018 season on a winning note here Friday evening at Community Bank Park.
JCJC pounded out 19 hits en route to a 13-7 victory over the Southwest Tennessee Community College Saluquis in game one of a doubleheader.
The one and two hitters in the Bobcat batting order –
Robbie Woody (Madison Central) and Luke Henry (Mooreville) – did their job as table-setters for the offense.
Woody had two singles, two doubles and scored two runs. Henry had a triple, three singles and scored three runs.
Luke Hudson (Presbyterian Christian School) had a home run, double and single and
Luke McKenzie (Columbia Academy) had a double and two singles.
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) had a triple and single,
Tate Pepper (Ocean Springs) doubled and singled and
Stephen Matthews (Tupelo) rounded out the offense with a double.
On the mound, starter
Will Freeman (Semmes, Alabama) went the first five innings and got the win. The Alabama signee allowed three hits, walked two and struck out seven. D.J. Alexander (Gretna, Louisiana) tossed two innings, allowed three hits, struck out three and walked two.
Kyle Shepherd (Collegiate Christian) went the final two innings, allowed hit, walked three and struck out one.
Cameron Pleasant had two singles for Southwest Tennessee, while Barrone Porter homered. R.J. Bell doubled with Nate Sumner, Jacob Nobles and Blake Daniels adding singles.
Brayden Green was the starter and loser, going four innings, allowed nine hits, walking one and striking out three. Adrian Comas pitched two innings and allowed five hits. Ben Kirby pitched two innings and gave up five hits.
The Bobcats scored six runs in the second inning and led 7-1 after five. The Bobcats were up 10-1 after six before the Saluquis scored five runs in the top of the seventh. JCJC responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
