ELLISVILLE – Top-rated Jones County Junior College defeated Meridian Community College 8-3 in game one of a doubleheader here Saturday afternoon at Commmunity Bank Park.
Will Freeman's (Semmes, Alabama) first start of the season was a solid one.
Freeman went six innings, allowed three runs (one earned), four hits, walked one and struck out three. He got the win to improve to 3-0.
Reed Michel (West Lauderdale) pitched the seventh inning, allowed no hits and struck out the side.
Tristan Labove (Petal) went the final two innings, allowed no hits and struck out three.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when
Hudson Harris (West Jones) doubled, was sacrificed to third by
Caleb Ledet (Houma, Louisiana) and scored on a
Fred Franklin (West Lauderdale) groundout.
The Eagles would go up 3-1 in the fourth.
Chase Coker was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single by Landon Keller. Luke Craig was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. A dropped pop up allowed Keller to score and Garrett Busby followed with an RBI single.
The Bobcats got a run back in the bottom of the inning when
Tanner Huddleston (George County) homered over the leftfield wall.
Jones would take a 5-3 lead in the fifth.
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) led off with a single and Ledet was hit by a pitch. Franklin reached on a fielder's choice and an error allowed Woullard to score.
After
Shelton Wallace (Northwest Rankin) walked, Franklin scored on an error. Huddleston's single drove Wallace home.
Jones closed the scoring in the sixth when
Jacob Hiatt (Petal) and Woullard walked and Harris was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Franklin then cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right.
Huddleston homered and singled twice, while
Jonathan Parker (New Orleans, Louisiana) had two singles. Franklin tripled and had three RBIs with Harris getting a double. Woullard added a single.
Briar Russell went the first 4 1/3 innings for MCC and got the loss. He allowed four runs, four hits, walked one and struck out one. Logan McDowell pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowed three runs, one hit, walked three and struck out one. Caleb Yarborough went three innings, allowed one run, three hits, walked two and struck out six.
Busby singled twice for the Eagles with Keller and Zack Carter adding singles.
