ELLISVILLE –
J.D. Polles (Presbyterian Christian School) hit two home runs and
Grayson Livingston (Wayne Academy) belted a grand slam as No. 1 Jones County Junior College routed Holmes Community College 20-1 in seven innings in game one of a doubleheader here Tuesday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
Jones set the tone in the bottom of the first inning when
Shelton Wallace (Northwest Rankin) led off with a double and
Caleb Ledet (Houma, Louisiana) and
Erick Hoard (Brandon) walked to load the bases.
Tanner Huddleston (George County) followed with a two-run single,
Jacob Hiatt (Petal) delivered an RBI double and
Hudson Harris (West Jones) had a two-run single to make it 5-0.
JCJC made it 8-0 in the second when Ledet singled and took second on a throwing error. Hoard followed with an RBI single and Huddleston doubled to left. Hoard scored on a wild pitch and Hiatt's sacrifice fly to center scored Huddleston.
In the third, Polles hit a one-out, solo home run to left.
Jacob Vick (East Central) singled and Wallace and Ledet walked to load the bases. Hoard's sacrifice fly to deep right scored Vick and made it 10-0.
With nobody on and two outs in the fourth, Polles walked, Vick singled and Wallace was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Livingston then hit a pinch-hit, grand slam over the leftfield wall to give Jones a 14-0 lead.
In the fifth, Harris was hit by a pitch,
Miguel Morgan (South Jones) reached on an infield single and Polles followed with his second home run of the game to make it 17-0.
Holmes scored its run in the sixth when Peyton Sullivan walked and Brodie Threet singled. Sullivan eventually scored on the front end of a double steal.
The Bobcats added three more in the sixth.
Hoard and Huddleston singled and Hiatt followed with a two-run double. Morgan doubled to left to score Hiatt.
Mason Strickland (South Jones) posted the victory. He went the first five innings, allowed no runs, three hits, walked none and struck out six. The Southern Miss signee is now 10-1 on the season.
Reed Michel (West Lauderdale) pitched the sixth inning, allowed one run, one hit, walked one and struck out one.
Zach Taylor (Brandon) pitched the seventh, allowed no runs and one hit.
Polles homered twice, singled and drove in four runs; Hiatt doubled twice and had four RBIs; and Livingston had the grand slam and four RBIs. Wallace, Hoard and Huddleston each doubled and singled twice. Morgan doubled and singled, while Vick had two singles. Ledet and Harris each had a single.
Nick Lawrence, the first of four Holmes' pitchers, started and took the loss. He lasted 2 1/3 innings, allowed 10 runs, 10 hits and walked four. Will Jordan, Jeb Malley and Threet also pitched.
Threet singled twice for Holmes with Sage Mullins, Kyle Singleton and Josh Tucker adding singles.
