ELLISVILLE – No. 1 Jones County Junior College used a five-run, fourth inning to overtake No. 7 Itawamba Community College and eventually post a 12-7 victory in game one here Saturday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
JCJC struck first by scoring three runs in the third inning.
With two outs,
Caleb Ledet (Houma, Louisiana) and
Fred Franklin (West Lauderdale) drew walks and
Shelton Wallace (Northwest Rankin) followed with an RBI single.
Erick Hoard (Brandon) walked to load the bases and
Tanner Huddleston (George County) delivered a two-run single.
But Itawamba bounced back in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead.
Bryan Malone led off with a double and Russ Payne and Keith Stepter were both hit by pitches to load the bases. Ben Seay then hit a double to the gap in left-center to clear the bases and tie the game. After Drake Wallace drew a walk, Kaleb Barnes hit into a 6-4-3 double play, which allowed a run to score.
But the Bobcats responded in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-4 lead.
Jacob Hiatt (Petal) reached on an error and
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) doubled.
Hudson Harris (West Jones) followed with a two-run single. Ledet then reached on a bunt single.
Shelton Wallace's double to right-center made it 6-4. Hoard drove in a run with an infield hit and with two outs,
Jonathan Parker (New Orleans, Louisiana) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hiatt then drew a walk to force a run home.
Drake Wallace hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth for ICC.
JCJC came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-5 lead.
Hoard led off with a single and Huddleston, Parker and Hiatt were all hit by pitches in succession. Woullard's sacrifice fly to left drove in another run.
ICC scored in the seventh when Tyreque Reed reached on an error, Austin Carpenter singled and Payne followed with an RBI single.
The Bobcats added a run in the bottom of the seventh when Ledet led off with a double and scored on Franklin's triple to right-center.
Parker led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run to give Jones a 12-6 lead and ICC's Reed hit a home run in the top of the ninth to end the scoring.
Kyle Shepherd (Collegiate Christian) pitched 1 2/3 innings in middle relief and got the win. He allowed one run on three hits, struck out three and made his record 1-0 on the year.
Will Freeman (Semmes, Alabama) went the final 3 1/3 innings, allowed two runs (one earned), five hits and struck out four. Starter
Mason Strickland (South Jones) pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowed four runs, seven hits and struck out three.
Shelton Wallace and Ledet each doubled and singled, while Hoard had two singles. Parker homered, Franklin tripled, Woullard doubled and Huddleston and Harris each had singles.
J.T. Salter lasted 3 1/3 innings for ICC and took the loss. He gave up eight runs (seven earned), seven hits and struck out four. Trenton Stringer pitched 1 2/3 innings and Blake Appel pitched the final three innings.
Malone doubled twice and singled twice, while Drake Wallace homered and singled. Carpenter and Barnes each had two singles with Reed getting a home run. Seay had a double and Hagen Box and Payne added singles.
