SUMMIT – No. 1 Jones County Junior College scored 12 runs in the fifth inning and crushed Southwest Mississippi 17-3 in five innings of a scheduled seven-inning contest here Wednesday in game two of a doubleheader.
JCJC took the opener, 13-1.
The Bobcats are now 29-1 overall and top the MACJC at 11-1. Jones will host Itawamba in a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. Both games will air on
www.jcjc.tv.
JCJC sent 16 batters to the plate in the fifth inning.
The Bobcats led 3-0 after one inning, 3-2 after two, 4-2 after three and 5-2 after four.
Erick Hoard (Brandon) homered, doubled twice and drove in three runs. That gave him 17 total bases on the day. Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) homered and singled, while Tanner Huddleston (George County) doubled and singled.
Jonathan Parker (New Orleans, Louisiana) had two singles.
Jacob Hiatt (Petal), Franklin,
Tate Pepper (Ocean Springs) and
Caleb Ledet (Houma, Louisiana) each had doubles. Pepper had three RBIs with Huddleston, Parker and Woullard getting two each.
Reed Michel (West Lauderdale) posted the win to go to 5-0 on year. He went four innings, allowed two runs (none earned, three hits, walked one and struck out three.
Will Freeman (Semmes, Alabama) pitched the final inning, gave up one run, three hits and struck out two.
Brantley Hughes had two singles, while Andrew Beesley, Hutchinson, Cole and Crishaun Speight had one hit each.
Tyler Pigott went four-plus innings and got the loss, giving up nine runs (eight earned), nine hits, two walks and posting two strikeouts. Kyle Coleman, Cody Ross and Sy Odom each pitched 1/3 of an inning in the fifth.
Southwest is 12-15 overall and 1-11 in conference play. The Bears travel to Northwest on Saturday.
