ELLISVILLE – Top-ranked Jones County Junior College has captured the MACJC championship and will host the Region 23 Tournament.
The Bobcats defeated Coahoma Community College 12-6 in game two of a doubleheader here Saturday evening at Community Bank Park.
Jones took the opener, 16-2 in seven innings.
JCJC now has a 40-2 overall record and 22-2 in the conference. Hinds, Itawamba and East Central are tied for second place at 15-9 and only four games remain in the regular season.
The Bobcats will not have to play in the opening round MACJC best-of-3 playoff series and will host the six-team, double-elimination Region 23 Tournament May 17-20.
The Bobcats host Holmes in a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday. Both games will air on
www.jcjc.tv. JCJC concludes regular season play at home with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on May 6.
Coahoma, 16-24 overall and 5-19 in the league, hosts Mississippi Delta on Wednesday.
JCJC took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two.
Shelton Wallace (Northwest Rankin) walked,
Erick Hoard (Brandon) doubled and
Jonathan Parker (New Orleans, Louisiana) drove them in with a triple to right.
Jacob Hiatt's (Petal) groundout scored Parker.
The Tigers made it 3-2 in the second when Drew Smith singled, Marquellus Edgeston walked and Hector Torres doubled them home.
The Bobcats went up 8-2 in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs after there were two outs.
Fred Franklin (West Lauderdale) was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single by Wallace. Hoard followed with an RBI double and Parker drew a walk. Hiatt followed with an RBI single. Parker scored on the front end of a double steal and Hiatt scored on a wild pitch.
Coahoma scored a run in the third when Trenton Johns doubled and Deaonteau Rieves followed with an RBI single.
Jones took a 10-3 lead in the bottom of the third when Franklin singled, stole second and scored on a single by Wallace. Wallace stole second and scored when Hoard reached on a single and Coahoma committed an error.
JCJC made it 12-3 in the fifth when Franklin and Parker walked and Hiatt drove them in with a double.
The Tigers cut the lead to 12-6 in the sixth.
Rieves led off with a double, Edgeston singled and Torres got an RBI single. Hayden Tapper singled and Hunter Wilson got an RBI double. After Latalo Newson walked, Johns had an RBI single.
Will Freeman (Semmes, Alabama), the third of five Bobcat pitchers, was credited with the win. He pitched two innings, struck out one and allowed one hit as he improved to 2-0.

Reed Michel (West Lauderdale) pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowed two runs, three hits, walked three and struck out three.
Bryce Fagan (Petal) tossed 1 1/3 innings, allowed one run, two hits and struck out two.
Brayden Hodge (South Jones) pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowed three runs and six hits.
Tristan Labove (Petal) pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowed no runs, no hits and struck out two.
Hoard doubled twice and singled, while Wallace had three singles. Hiatt doubled, singled and drove in three runs with Franklin getting two singles. Parker had a triple and Luther Woullard (D'Ibervile) singled.
The Bobcats had nine steals in the game with Franklin getting four of those.
Eduardo Munoz was the starter and loser. He pitched 1-plus inning, allowed eight runs, six hits, walked three, hit two and struck out one. Preston Upshaw pitched two innings, allowed two runs and three hits. Luke Hobson pitched three innings, allowed two runs, three hits and walked five.
Torres doubled and singled twice for the Tigers, while Tapper, Johns and Rieves each doubled and singled. Wilson had a double with Drew Smith and Edgeston getting singles.
