BOONEVILLE – Top-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats scored eight runs in the first inning and went on to a 13-1, seven-inning victory over Northeast Mississippi here Saturday afternoon in game one at Harold T. White Field.
Fred Franklin (West Lauderdale) set the tone for the day quickly when he led off the game with a double. He was balked to third and scored on a single by
Shelton Wallace (Northwest Rankin). Wallace stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored when
Erick Hoard (Brandon) reached on a dropped third strike.
Tanner Huddleston (George County) followed with a two-run home run to make it 4-0.
With two outs in the inning,
Luther Woullard (D'iberville) doubled,
Hudson Harris (West Jones) singled and
Caleb Ledet (Houma, Louisiana) delivered an RBI single. Franklin then blasted a three-run home run.
The Bobcats made it 10-0 in the third when Franklin and Wallace were hit by pitches and Hoard singled to load the bases. Huddleston then hit a two-run single.
The Tigers got on the board when Tucker Childers hit a home run in the bottom of the third.
The Bobcats made it 11-1 in the fourth when
Jacob Hiatt (Petal) was hit by a pitch, went to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Ledet.
Jones added a run in the fifth when Wallace and Huddleston singled and
Jonathan Parker (New Orleans, Louisiana) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hiatt's sacrifice fly to center scored Wallace.
Parker closed the scoring when he led off the seventh with a home run.
Mason Strickland (South Jones) started and got the win, improving to 7-1. He went six innings, allowed one run, eight hits, walked one and struck out five.
Brayden Hodge (South Jones) pitched the seventh inning and got a pair of strikeouts.
Huddleston homered, singled twice and drove in four runs, while Ledet had three singles and a pair of RBIs. Franklin homered, doubled and had three RBIs. Wallace and Hiatt each had a pair of singles. Parker homered, Woullard doubled and Hoard, Harris and
Tristan Labove added singles.
Childers homered and singled for the Tigers with Parker Haberstroh getting two singles. A.J. Roaten had a double with Garrison Howell, John David Poss and Bailey Walker adding singles.
Starter Skyler Defer last 2/3 of an inning and took the loss. He gave up eight runs on seven hits. Matthew Snead, Xan Reese and Ryan Holland also pitched for Northeast.
