ELLISVILLE –
Luther Woullard's (D'Iberville) two-run home sparked No. 1 Jones County to an 8-3 decision over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in game two of a doubleheader here Wednesday evening at Community Bank Park.
The Bobcats won game one, 4-3.
JCJC is now 35-1 overall and 17-1 in the MACJC. They own a four-game lead over second place Hinds in the conference with just 10 games remaining. The Eagles are 13-5.
The Bobcats are scheduled to travel to Mississippi Delta for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
MGCCC, 20-14 and 9-9, is scheduled to host Meridian on Saturday.
Jones went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first of game two.
Fred Franklin (West Lauderdale) reached on an error and
Shelton Wallace (Northwest Rankin) followed with an infield hit. Franklin would score on a sacrifice fly to left by Erick Hoard (Brandon).
MGCCC tied the game in the second when Chase Fagan singled and scored on Colby Cagle's double inside the bag at first and into the rightfield corner.
JCJC took a 2-1 lead in the third. Franklin walked, stole second and third, but was thrown out 5-2-5-1 on a Wallace grounder. Wallace managed to get to second on the play, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
In the fourth,
Jacob Hiatt (Petal) singled and Woullard followed with a two-run blast over the leftfield wall to make it 4-1.
MGCCC trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the fifth.
Cagle walked, Ian Goff singled and Tyler Evans walked to load the bases with two outs. Logan McGrew followed with a two-run single.
But the Bobcats came back to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Wallace walked and Tanner Huddleston (George County) was hit by a pitch.
Jonathan Parker (New Orleans, Louisiana) came through with a two-run double to make it 6-3. Hiatt then doubled Parker home.
The Bobcats closed the scoring in the sixth when
Tate Pepper (Ocean Springs) singled and was replaced by courtesy runner
Jacob Vick (East Central). Caleb Ledet (Houma, Louisiana) sacrificed Vick to second. Vick took third on an error and scored on Franklin's ground out.
Logan Robbins (George County) went the first five innings and got the win. He allowed three runs, six hits, walked two and struck out six as he upped his record to 9-0.
Bryce Fagan (Petal) pitched the sixth inning, allowed one hit and struck out two.
Will Freeman (Semmes, Alabama) tossed the seventh, allowed no hits and struck out one.
Hiatt doubled and singled, while Woullard homered and Parker doubled. Wallace and Pepper added singles.
Dylan Mills-Derouen pitched the first 4 2/3 innings and took the loss. He allowed seven runs (six earned), four hits, walked four and struck out seven. Mason Sullivan pitched 1/3 of an inning and did not allow a hit. Brandon Kennedy pitched an inning, allowed an unearned run, one hit and one walk.
Evans and Cagle each doubled and singled, while Goff, McGrew and Fagan added singles for the Bulldogs.
