ELLISVILLE – No. 1 Jones County Junior College overcame a slow start, scored the game's final 15 runs and beat Copiah-Lincoln Community College 16-6 in eiight innings here Tuesday afternoon at Community Bank Park in game one of a doubleheader.
Jones took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when
Erick Hoard (Brandon) blasted his 10
th home run of the season over the leftfield wall.
But Co-Lin scored twice in the second and fourth in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.
The Bobcats made it 6-5 in the fifth.
Caleb Ledet (Houma, Louisiana) was hit by a pitch and
Fred Franklin (West Lauderdale) singled.
Shelton Wallace (Northwest Rankin) then hit a fly ball to center that was misplayed into a two-run triple. Hoard then smashed a double to the wall in left to score Wallace and make it 6-4. Hoard would later score on a passed ball.
Jones tied it in the bottom of the seventh when Franklin was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single by Hoard.
The Bobcats then ended the game in the bottom of the eighth when they sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs.
Woullard led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. He was sacrificed to third by
Tate Pepper (Ocean Springs). Ledet reached on an infield hit and Woullard stayed at third. Franklin drew a walk to load the bases.
Wallace then cleared the bases with a double to make it 9-6. Hoard's single scored Wallace.
Tanner Huddleston (George County) walked and
Jonathan Parker (New Orleans, Louisiana) reached on an infield hit to load the bases.
Jacob Hiatt's (Petal) fielder's choice scored Hoard.
Woullard then followed with a three-run home run over the left field wall to make it 14-6.
Pepper and Ledet followed with singles and Franklin's single drove in a run. Wallace's double to left scored Ledet and ended the game.
Brayden Hodge (South Jones) pitched two innings in relief and got the win. He allowed no runs and one hit as he gained his first win of the season.
Ben Stiglets (Gulfport) was the starter. He went six innings, allowed six runs (none earned), five hits, walked two and struck out three.
Hoard homered, doubled, singled twice and had four RBIs. Wallace tripled, doubled twice and had six RBIs. Woullard homered, doubled, singled and had three RBIs. Franklin, Parker and Ledet each had two singles and Huddleston, Hiatt and Pepper added singles.
J.T. Wright and Matthew Mordecai had two singles each for Co-Lin, while Austin O'Flynn and Reggie Connor each singled.
Josh Stephens was charged with the loss. He faced three batters in relief and did not retire one. He gave up three runs, two hits and walked one. Starter Jordan Bowden went 4 2/3 innings, allowed five runs (four earned), six hits, walked four and struck out three. Zach James followed Bowden and lasted 2 2/3 innings. He gave up five runs, six hits, walked two and struck out one. Ryan Cullop went 1/3 of an inning, allowed three runs and five hits.
