SCOOBA – Top-ranked Jones County Junior College rallied from a 5-1 deficit and defeated No. 14 East Mississippi 8-5 in game one of a doubleheader here Saturday afternoon at Gerald Poole Field.
Fred Franklin (West Lauderdale) had five hits as JCJC improved to 21-0 and won the first MACJC game of the season.
Jones took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Franklin led off with a double, went to third on a passed ball and scored on
Shelton Wallace's (Northwest Rankin) ground out.
The Lions got a grand slam and a solo home run back-to-back in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead.
But JCJC came right back in the fourth to tie the score.
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) led off with a triple and
Tristan Labove (Petal) drew a walk.
Caleb Ledet's (Houma, Louisiana) single scored Woullard.
Franklin then drilled a three-home run to left to make it 5-5.
The Bobcats took a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning when Ledet was hit by a pitch and Franklin followed with a single. Wallace reached on a fielder's choice to score Ledet.
Jones expanded the lead in the eighth.
Ledet was hit by a pitch and Franklin reached on a bunt single. Wallace doubled to score Ledet and
Erick Hoard (Brandon) walked to load the bases.
Tanner Huddleston (George County) then walked to score Franklin.
Mason Strickland (South Jones) was the starter and winner, as he improved to 6-0. He went six innings, gave up five runs, seven hits, walked three and struck out six.
Kyle Shepherd (Collegiate Christian) pitched two innings, allowed no runs, one hit, walked one and struck out one.
Will Freeman (Semmes, Alabama) pitched the ninth inning and got his third save of the year, striking out one.
Franklin homered, doubled, singled three times and had three RBIs and scored three runs.
Jonathan Parker (New Orleans, Louisiana) had four singles and Huddleston singled twice. Woullard tripled, Wallace doubled and Ledet singled.
Whitt Davis homered, singled and drove in four runs and Mike Farnell homered for EMCC.
Alex Knight was the starter and loser. He went 5 2/3 innings, allowed six runs (five earned), 11 hits, walked one and struck out three.
