ELLISVILLE – Fifteen strikeouts lifted No. 1 Jones County Junior College to a 7-4 win over Baton Rouge Community College (Louisiana) here Wednesday evening at Community Bank Park in game two of a doubleheader.
JCJC took the opener, 4-2.
The Bobcats, 8-0, will host Kaskaskia Community College (Illinois) in a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
Baton Rouge, 6-15, will play Wallace State-Hanceville (Alabama) and Tyler Junior College (Texas) on Friday at East Central in Decatur.
JCJC starter
Reed Michel (West Lauderdale) started and got the win. He went four innings, allowed one run, three hits, walked one and struck out 10.
Brayden Hodge (South Jones) pitched the next two innings, allowed three runs, six hits and struck out three.
Kyle Shepherd (Collegiate Christian Academy) pitched the final inning and got the save. He allowed no hits and struck out two.
Baton Rouge took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Seth Daugherty and John Mauldin singled.Tyler Laporte singled Daugherty home.
The Bobcats came back in the third inning and put up four runs.
Luther Woullard (D'Iberville) was hit by a pitch to start the inning. After a
Tate Pepper (Ocean Springs) sacrifice,
Fred Franklin (West Lauderdale) tripled into the gap in right-center to drive Woullard home.
Shelton Wallace (Northwest Rankin) then ripped an infield single off the pitcher's glove to score Franklin. After
Erick Hoard (Brandon) drew a walk,
Tanner Huddleston (George County) reached on a fielder's choice.
Jonathan Parker (New Orleans) then crushed a two-run double to left-center.
Jones took a 7-1 lead in the fifth.
Franklin and Wallace singled and Hoard walked to load the bases. Huddleston then walked to score Franklin. Parker's fielder's choice scored Wallace and
Grant Schulz's (Mereaux, Louisiana) single scored Parker.
Baton Rouge closed the gap in the sixth.
Hunter David led off with a single and with one out, Mueller reached on a fielder's choice. Joseph Domingue tripled to left to score a run. Hodges followed with a single to score Domingue.
After Keith Meier singled, Caleb Prejean followed with another single. Hodges scored, but pinchrunner Charles Belair was thrown out at home by Wallace in leftfield.
Shepherd retired the side in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Franklin tripled and singled for JCJC, while Parker doubled and had three RBIs. Wallace had two singles with Huddleston and Schulz adding singles.
Daugherty singled twice for the Bears, while Domingue tripled. Prejean, Mauldin, David, Laporte, Hodges and Meier added singles.
Melvin Frazier went four-plus innings and took the loss. He allowed six runs, six hits, walked one and struck out four. Brennan Maggio walked the only batter he faced. Logan Ammons allowed a hit in one inning. Jake Murry pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning.
