Sasser, Mikell key No. 2 Bobcats past Northwest

ELLISVILLE – Clint Sasser homered to lead off the bottom of the first inning and Calder Mikell gave up only two hits in six innings as the No. 2 Jones County Bobcats eliminated the Northwest Rangers 10-4 here Saturday afternoon in the MACJC Tournament.
With the victory, the Bobcats advance to the championship vs. East Central Saturday night.
Northwest took its only lead of the game in the second inning.
David Herrington and Jamell Newson drew walks and both advanced on a double steal. Cody Cooper's two-out single scored the runners.
JCJC tied it in the third when Dalton Skelton singled and Fred Franklin doubled him home.
The Bobcats took control with a five-run fifth.
Wallace singled, Irby was hit by a pitch and Huddleston's single scored Wallace. After Erick Hoard walked to load the bases, Irby scored on a wild pitch to put Jones ahead, 4-2. John Alan Wall followed with a two-run double to left and would later score on a wild pitch.
JCJC made it 8-2 in the sixth when Irby singled, stole second and scored on Huddleston's single.
The Rangers scored a run in the seventh when Cooper singled and was replaced by courtesy runner Hunter Bishop. Aleck Hobson was hit by a pitch and Hunter Wilson's singled scored Bishop.
The Bobcats took a 10-3 lead in the seventh.
With two outs, Skelton was hit by a pitch and Franklin reached on a fielder's choice. A throwing error allowed Skelton to score and a single by Wallace scored Franklin.
Northwest closed the scoring in the eighth when Newson singled, went to second on a ground out and scored on an error.
Mikell, 9-1, allowed two earned runs, two hits, walked seven and struck out four as the Southern Miss signee gained the win. Logan Robbins recorded his first save of the season. He pitched the final three innings, allowed two runs (one earned), three hits, walked one and struck out two.
Wallace had three singles for the Bobcats, while Irby and Huddleston had two singles each. Sasser homered with Franklin and Hoard having doubles and Wall and Skelton adding singles.
Cooper and Wilson had two singles each for Northwest, while Newson had one single.
Peyton Plumlee, 6-2, started and took the loss. The Mississippi State signee allowed seven runs (all earned), eight hits, walked four and struck out one. J.R. Miller pitched 2 1/3 innings, gave up three earned runs, three hits, walked two and struck out one. Hunter Lacefield pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up one hit and recorded strikeout. Kody Busby pitched 2/3 an inning, allowed no runs, walked one and struck out one.
The Rangers are now 29-19 on the years.
