ELLISVILLE – The 2
nd-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats continue to set a torrid pace in the MACJC.
The Bobcats got two home runs from
Erick Hoard – including a three-run walkoff shot in the bottom of the sixth inning – and another roundtripper from
Tanner Huddleston and defeated Mississippi Delta 12-2 in Game 2 of a doubleheader here Saturday evening at Community Bank Park.
The Bobcats combined for 30 hits in the doubleheader and played errorless baseball.
JCJC is now 37-3 overall and leads the MACJC with a 20-2 record. Jones is ahead by five games with only six regular season games remaining.
The Trojans fall to 19-16 overall, 9-13 in conference play.
The Bobcats will play will their final home regular season doubleheader at 3 p.m. on April 27 vs. Hinds. Both of those games will air on
www.jcjc.tv. JCJC travels to Coahoma on April 30 and Meridian on May 2 to end regular season play. The Bobcats will host a best-of-three MACJC playoff series on May 6-7.
Mississippi Delta hosts Northeast Mississippi on April 27.
JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when with two outs, Huddleston was hit by a pitch and scored on Hoard's triple to right.
The Trojans took a 2-1 lead in the second when Nathan Pilutti led off with a double and Jake Hartman walked. Wendell Rieves then followed with a two-run double.
But Jones quickly regained the lead in the third.
With two outs,
Jonathan Parker singled and was replaced by courtesy runner
Chris Richardson.
Fred Franklin singled and
Clint Sasser drove both runners in with a single.
The Bobcats went up 5-2 in the third.
Huddleston led off with a deep home run well over the leftfield wall. Hoard was then hit by a pitch and
John Alan Wall singled him over to third. Wall was then thrown out trying to steal second, but Hoard stole home on the play.
JCJC made it 6-2 in the fourth when Franklin reached on a bloop single and Sasser singled.
Shelton Wallace's infield single scored Sasser.
The Bobcats stretched the lead to 9-2 in the fifth.
Hoard led off the inning with a mammoth home run to left. Wall drew a walk and scored on
Dalton Skelton's double. Parker's single scored Skelton.
The Bobcats ended it in the sixth inning of the scheduled seven-inning game.
Wallace reached on a dropped third strike and Richardson singled. Hoard then lined a home run over the "green monster" in dead center field. That gives a team-leading 13 home runs on the season.
Calder Mikell, 8-1, went five innings and got the win. He allowed two earned runs, two hits, walked three and struck out eight.
Will Brand pitched the sixth inning and struck out two.
Hoard homered twice, tripled, had 11 total bases and drove in five runs for the Bobcats. Parker, Sasser and Franklin each had two singles. Huddleston homered, Skelton doubled and Wall, Wallace and Richardson added singles.
Pilutti and Rieves doubled for MDCC's only hits.
Tyler Milligan pitched the first 3 2/3 innings and took the loss. He allowed six earned runs, nine hits, walked none and struck out three. Tyler Dowdy pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowed three earned runs, three hits and walked one. Kyle Colston pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowed three runs (two earned), two hits and struck out one.
