ELLISVILLE –
Calder Mikell tossed a complete game, one-hitter and
Erick Hoard hit a solo home run as Jones County nipped Arkansas Baptist 1-0 here Saturday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at Community Bank Park.
Mikell, a redshirt freshman from Petal, was excellent for the Bobcat.
He allowed a two-out single to Jose Santana in the fourth inning for Arkansas Baptist's only hit. He retired the game's final 10 batters after that.
Mikell walked Kedric Bailey – the game's leadoff batter – but he was doubled off of first base when Tomas Gonzalez lined out to first baseman Hoard, who stepped on the bag.
With two outs in the fourth, Mikell hit Derek St. Clair and Bailey. But Ryan Mallison grounded the ball to second baseman
Clint Sasser, who stepped on second base for the force to end the inning.
Mikell, an Ole Miss transfer, struck out six as he improved to 3-0.
Hoard launched a home run over the rightfield wall with one out in the second inning and the Bobcats made it stand up.
JCJC threatened again in the sixth when
Shelton Wallace and
Mason Irby got two-out singles. But
Tanner Huddleston's force out to third ended the inning.
The hits by Wallace and Irby were JCJC's only other hits besides Hoard's home run.
Victor Magallanes went the distance and took the loss for Arkansas Baptist. He allowed one run, three hits, walked none and struck out four.
