Grand slam lifts Southwest past Bobcats

ELLISVILLE – Southwest hit a grand slam home run in the second inning and went on to defeat Jones County Junior College 4-1 here Tuesday afternoon in game two at Community Bank Park.
The Bobcats won the opener, 6-1.
JCJC is now 22-2 overall and 5-1 in the MACJC. Southwest is 13-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
The Bobcats threatened to score in the bottom of the first inning.
With one out, Shelton Wallace singled, Mason Irby doubled and Tanner Huddleston walked to load the bases. But Erick Hoard grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Southwest scored its runs in the second inning.
Darian Tunstall singled, Zach Giacona reached on a bunt single and L.D. Coney walked to load the bases. Brady Anderson then hit a two-out grand slam to give the Bears a 4-0 lead.
JCJC scored its only run in the third inning when Clint Sasser singled, took second on an error and scored on Mason Irby's single.
Irby doubled and singled, while Sasser singled twice for the Bobcats. Hoard had a double, while Wallace and Jonathan Parker added singles.
Calder Mikell, 4-1, started and took the loss. He pitched the first three innings, allowed four earned runs, five hits, walked three and struck out five. Zach Taylor pitched two innings, allowed no runs, two hits, walked one and struck out two. Jay Simpson pitched two innings, allowed two hits and walked two.
Braden Smith and Kaleb Clarke combined to hold down the Bobcats.
Smith was the starter and winner. He lasted four innings, allowed an unearned run, five hits, walked one and struck out none. Clarke tossed the final three innings and got the save. He gave up two hits, walked one and struck out five.
Anderson homered, Coney singled twice and Duncan Cornfoot doubled for the Bears. Ross Buckley, Tunstall, Steven Williams, Giacona and Dylan Spiers added singles.
The Bobcats conclude a 12-game homestand with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday vs. Northwest. The games will air on www.jcjc.tv. JCJC travels to Copiah-Lincoln for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on March 30.
Southwest hosts Mississippi Delta on Friday.
