RAYMOND – Jones County Junior College dropped a 6-5 decision to top-ranked Hinds Community College in game two of a doubleheader here Wednesday night at Joe G. Moss Field.
The Bobcats, 27-13 overall and 14-10 in the MACJC, host Coahoma at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Community Bank Park as "Sophomore Day" will be held. JCJC ends the regular season at East Central on Monday.
Hinds, 33-4 overall and 20-4 in the league, travels to Mississippi Delta on Saturday and hosts Meridian on Monday in its regular season finale.
The Eagles lead the MACJC, while Meridian follows at 18-6. East Mississippi and Northwest are tied for third at 17-7, while East Central is fifth at 17-9 The Bobcats are sixth, followed by Mississippi Delta at 13-11 and Mississippi Gulf Coast at 11-13. Itawamba is 11-15, Southwest and Holmes are at 10-14, Pearl River and Co-Lin are at 7-17, Northeast is 6-18 and Coahoma is 4-20.
The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
Just like game one, the Bobcats jumped out to a lead in the first inning.
Clint Sasser led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch and went to third on
Mason Irby's single.
John Alan Wall's single drove in Sasser to make it 1-0.
Hinds bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the first.
Quade Smith and Matt Jones singled and Tyler Cox followed with a single to drive in a run. After a strikeout, Marshall Boggs followed with a three-run home run to right.
But JCJC came right back in the second to tie the game at 4-4.
Walt Prince was hit by a pitch and
Chris Richardson reached on an error. Sasser followed with a single to score Prince. A groundout by
Carter Polles scored Richardson and Irby reached on an error to score Sasser.
Hinds took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the second. Smith drew a two-out walk, stole second and advanced to third on catcher's indifference. Jones then reached first on a dropped third strike and Smith scored on the play.
The Eagles made it 6-4 in the fourth.
Casey Echols walked, Smith doubled and Jones followed with an RBI single.
The Bobcats got a run in the sixth.
Tyler Schankin led off with a triple to right and scored on a groundout by Prince.
In the top of the seventh, the Bobcats got a two-out single by Polles, but a groundout ended the game.
Sasser singled twice for the Bobcats, while Schankin tripled. Polles, Irby and Wall added singles.
Daniel Goff, 7-2, started and took the loss. He went five innings, allowed five runs (all earned), six hits, walked three and struck out nine.
TJ Hollis pitched the sixth inning and allowed one hit.
Smith doubled and singled for the Eagles, while Jones singled twice. Boggs homered and had three RBIs with Cox and Kyle O'Keefe adding singles.
Casey Sutton was the starter and winner. He went six innings, allowed five runs (three earned), five hits, walked one and struck out five. Austin Sanders pitched the seventh inning and got the save. He allowed no runs and one hit.
