Top-ranked Hinds outlasts JCJC, 14-13

RAYMOND – Top-ranked Hinds Community College overcame 9-0 and 11-2 deficits to defeat Jones County Junior College 14-13 in game one of a doubleheader here Wednesday evening at Joe G. Moss Field.
The Eagles overcame deficits of 9-0 and 11-2 and beat the Bobcats 14-13 in game one. In game two, Hinds held on for a 6-5 decision.
The game was tied 12-12 going into the top of the ninth inning.
JCJC's Tyler Schankin led off with a walk, stole second and scored on Walt Prince's one-out single.
JCJC retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth, but Jordan Washam then doubled for the Eagles. Casey Echols then doubled to left and tied the game at 13-13. Hunter Bell then singled to put runners on first and third.
The Bobcats then got two strikes on Quade Smith. But on a 1-2 pitch, a passed ball allowed Echols to score the winning run.
It was all Bobcats early in the game.
In the first, Clint Sasser walked, stole second and scored on a groundout by Carter Polles.
The Bobcats made it 3-0 in the second when Schankin singled and scored on Peyton Attaway's double. Attaway took third on a groundout by Prince and scored on Chris Richardson's single.
JCJC then had a six-run, third inning.
Dylan Manichia and Polles singled to start the inning and Mason Irby followed with a three-run home run to make it 6-0. John Alan Wall and Schankin were then hit by pitches and Attaway doubled to score Wall. After Prince walked, Richardson singled to score Attaway and give the Bobcats a 9-0 lead.
Hinds got on the board in the bottom of the third. Kyle O'Keefe walked and Smith reached on an error. Tyler Cox reached on an error, which allowed O'Keefe and Smith to score.
JCJC got those runs back in the fourth when Irby singled and Wall followed with a home run to make it 11-2.
But the Eagles then scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 11-9.
Jonathan Washam led off with a single and Jordan Washam followed with another single. Echols then doubled a run home. After O'Keefe walked, Smith's sacrifice fly drove in Jordan Washam. Matt Jones then singled and Cox followed with another single to make it 11-5. Chance Lunceford's sacrifice fly drove in another run.
Marshall Boggs had an RBI single and Jonathan Washam followed with another run-scoring single. Jordan Washam walked to load the bases and Echols walked to force in a run.
Hinds cut the lead to 11-10 in the fifth. Cox singled, Lunceford reached on an error and Boggs singled a run home.
JCJC went up 12-10 in the sixth. Polles walked, went to second on a wild pitch and took third on a groundout. He then scored on another wild pitch.
The Eagles then tied the game at 12-12 in the bottom of the seventh. There was also a lengthy rain delay in the seventh.
Cox walked, and Lunceford and Boggs followed with singles to load the bases. Jordan Washam's single then brought home Cox and Lunceford.
Irby homered, singled and drove in three runs for the Bobcats. Attaway doubled twice, while Polles and Richardson each singled twice. Wall homered with Manichia, Schankin and Prince adding singles.
Christian Dale was the starter. He pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowed eight runs (six earned), six hits, walked three and struck out two. Will Brand pitched 1 2/3 innings, gave up two runs (one earned), four hits, walked two and struck out one. Will Simon pitched two innings, gave up two runs (both earned), four hits, walked two and struck out four. Tyler Schwaner, 2-3, pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and took the loss. He gave up two runs (one earned), four hits, walked none and struck out two.
Jordan Washam had two doubles and two singles for the Eagles. Boggs and Jonathan Washam had three singles each. Echols doubled twice with Jones and Cox getting two singles each. Lunceford and Hunter Bell added singles.
Austin Sanders pitched the final inning and got the win. He allowed no runs, one hit and struck out one. Derek Martin was the starter. Trent Driver, Timothy Jordan, Graham Ahlrich and Trey Jolly also pitched for the Eagles.
JCJC is now 27-12 overall and 14-9 in MACJC play.
Hinds is 32-4 and 19-4.
