Dylan Manichia drove in four runs and Jones County Junior College scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Holmes Community College 8-5 in game two of a doubleheader here Wednesday evening at Community Bank Park.
The sweep gives JCJC a 26-10 overall mark, 13-7 in MACJC play. JCJC will travel to Delta State University in Cleveland to meet Mississippi Delta in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday. The games were moved up from 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Holmes, 17-17 overall and 8-12 in league play, hosts Copiah-Lincoln on Saturday.
JCJC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Clnt Sasser walked, stole second and scored on a Manichia single. Manichia stole second and scored on
Mason Irby's single.
After the game was delayed 26 minutes by lightning in the second, Holmes took a 3-2 lead in the fourth.
Cody Sartin and Chad McNeil both singled and Carr McMorris sacrificed the runners. Tyler Hines then followed with a two-run single inside the third base bag. Maverick Keffer's double scored McMorris.
The Bulldogs took a 4-2 lead in the fifth. Kevin Barber and Sartin both singled and McNeil followed with an RBI double.
JCJC would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. Sasser led off with a walk and Manichia tripled into the right-center gap to make it 4-3. After
Carter Polles was hit by a pitch, Irby's groundout scored Manichia to tie the game.
Holmes would take a 5-4 lead in the sixth. Geoffrey King singled with one out. The Bobcats then had King picked off, but two errors on the play – a low throw and a booted ball – allowed King to score all the way from first.
But the Bobcats would bounce back in the bottom of the inning.
Peyton Attaway led off with a single.
Chris Richardson then bunted, but Holmes' pitcher Derrick Sylve slipped while trying to field the ball. Attaway was able to advance all the way to third on the play.
Sasser then reached on a one-out error, which allowed Attaway to score. Manichia then delivered a two-run double to give the Bobcats a 7-5 lead. Polles then followed with an RBI single.
Will Brand, 6-1, pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and got the win. He gave up an unearned run, two hits, walked none and struck out three.
Daniel Goff, the starter, went 4 1/3 innings, allowed four runs, eight hits, walked none and struck out five.
Manichia tripled, doubled and singled for the Bobcats with Polles, Irby, Wall, Attaway and Goff adding singles.
McNeil doubled twice and singled for Holmes. Sartin and Hines each had two singles. Keffer added a double with Barber and King getting singles.
Sylve went 5 1/3 innings and took the loss. He allowed eight runs, seven hits, walked three, hit one and struck out six. Michael Harrison went 2/3 of an inning, gave up one hit and notched a strikeout.
