SUMMIT – The 11
th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats broke an 8-8 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning and beat Southwest Mississippi 10-8 in game two of a doubleheader here Tuesday afternoon at Bears Field.
The victory snapped a four-game losing skid for the Bobcats.
JCJC is now 15-7 overall and 2-4 in the MACJC South Division. The Bobcats are scheduled to travel to Northwest Mississippi for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
Southwest is now 8-9 overall, 2-3 in the division. The Bears go to Mississippi Delta on Saturday.
JCJC started its winning rally in the final inning after the first two batters were retired.
Chris Richardson drew a walk and
Daniel Goff was hit by a pitch.
Chris Morgan's single scored Richardson and
Clint Sasser's single scored Goff to give JCJC the two-run margin.
Christian Dale then got the final three outs in the bottom of the inning.
The Bobcats had jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first.
Morgan led off with a single, Sasser reached on a fielder's choice and
Carter Polles singled to load the bases. With one out,
John Alan Wall singled Morgan home and
Tyler Schankin then followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0. Wall eventually scored on a passed ball.
After the Bears scored twice in the bottom of the first, JCJC responded with two runs in the second.
Morgan and Sasser both singled and advanced on a passed ball. Polles then delivered a two-run single to make it 6-3.
Southwest cut the lead to 6-5 in the bottom of the second, but JCJC came back with a run in the third.
Schankin led off with a single and Richardson reached on a two-base error. Goff's groundout scored Schankin to make it 7-5.
The Bears came back to take an 8-7 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but JCJC tied it in the top of the sixth when Sasser walked and later scored on an Irby groundout.
Dale, 2-1, pitched the final three innings and got the win. He gave up no hits, walked none, hit one and struck out three. Starter
Will Hazen pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowed eight runs (six earned), 10 hits, walked none and struck out one.
Taylor Karr pitched 2/3 of an inning, gave up two hits and walked one.
Morgan and Polles had three singles each for JCJC, while Sasser and Schankin had two singles each. Richardson doubled with Irby and Wall adding singles.
Ross Buckley doubled and singled twice for Southwest, while Kaleb Clarke had two doubles. L.D. Coney and Bryce Laird each singled twice with Walt Aldridge, Brady Anderson and Dylan Spiers adding singles.
Jordan McCaffrey – the fourth of five SMCC pitchers – went 1 2/3 innings, allowed two runs, no hits, walked one and struck out one and took the loss. Tanner Whittington was the starter and pitched an inning. Jade Whitten, Brady Wilson and Cliff Hurst also pitched.
