ELLISVILLE – East Mississippi scored four runs in the 10th inning – all after the first two batters were retired – and beat No. 11 Jones County Junior College 9-5 in game one of a doubleheader here Sunday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
JCJC rallied from an early 3-0 deficit, took a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hold on against the Lions.
JoVaughn McNabb led off the game with a single and Dylan Vuncannon reached on a fielder's choice for EMCC. David Pimentel then doubled to put runners on second and third.
Chris McCullough then ripped a three-run home run over the right-center field wall to put the Lions up 3-0.
The Bobcats began their comeback in the second when
John Alan Wall led off with a walk and
Tyler Schankin got a one-out single. After a pop out,
Chris Richardson delivered a run-scoring single.
The Bobcats took the lead in the third inning.
Carter Polles got a one-out single and
Mason Irby followed with a two-run home run to center to tie it at 3-3.
With two outs,
Dylan Manichia drew a walk and Schankin hit a deep fly ball to center that Taylor Stafford count not locate. The ball rolled to the wall and Manichia scored on the Schankin triple.
JCJC took a 5-3 lead in the sixth. Schankin and Richardson each singled and
Chris Morgan's groundout scored Schankin.
The Lions made it 5-4 in the seventh when McCullough led off with a walk and Emil Ellis reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Kyle Liberto delivered an RBI single.
EMCC tied it in the eighth. McNabb led off with a single, stole second, was sacrificed to third by Vuncannon and scored on Pimentel's sacrifice fly.
The Lions then broke through with their four-run, 10th inning.
Vuncannon doubled to left and Pimentel was intentionally walked. McCullough then drew a walk to load the bases. Ellis followed with a two-run single and Stafford delivered a two-run double.
The Bobcats were then retired in order in the bottom of the inning.
Schankin tripled and singled twice for JCJC, while Richardson singled twice. Irby homered, while Morgan, Polles, Wall and
Daniel Goff each singled.
McCullough homered, singled and drove in three runs for the Lions. Stafford doubled twice, while McNabb and Ellis each singled twice. Vuncannon and Pimentel each doubled with Liberto and Corley Reynolds adding singles.
Goff was the starter for the Bobcats. He went 6 2/3 innings, allowed three earned runs, six hits, walked one and struck out five. He retired 15 batters in a row after giving up the three runs and four hits in the first inning.
Tyler Schwaner, 1-1, went the final 3 1/3 innings and took the loss. He gave up four earned runs, six hits, walked two and struck out two.
Jay Booth pitched a perfect ninth inning and got the win.
Andrew Crane went the first three innings for EMCC, allowed four runs, five hits, walked two and struck out one. JC Redden pitched five innings and gave up one run, five hits, walked none and struck out three. Ryan Rigby pitched a 1-2-3 10
th inning.
