ELLISVILLE –
Cody Mordecai tossed six shutout innings to pace the 11
th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats to a 4-1 decision over Mississippi Delta Community College in game two of a doubleheader here Friday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
The Bobcats improved to 9-1 with the win, while MDCC fell to 5-4.
Mordecai, a freshman from Heritage Academy in Columbus, was excellent as the Bobcat starter.
He went six innings, allowed no runs, four hits, walked three and struck out five as he improved to 1-1.
The Bobcats took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, scoring all three runs with two outs.
Carter Polles had a one-out single. With two outs,
Josh Keel drew a walk.
Chris Morgan then singled, which scored Polles. Keel advanced to third and Morgan reached second on an error.
Clint Sasser then singled to right to drive in Keel and Morgan.
JCJC made it 4-0 in the fifth when
Mason Irby reached on an error and Polles tripled into the rightfield corner to score the run.
MDCC's only run came in the seventh when Aryeon Davis led off with a double and later scored on Ty Dean's single.
Tyler Schwaner pitched the final inning for the Bobcats, allowing one run, three hits and a walk.
Polles tripled and singled twice, while Sasser singled twice and drove in two runs. Morgan and
Dylan Manichia added singles.
Tays Hardy singled twice for MDCC, while Davis and Michael Beloso doubled. Dean, Jordan Lambert and Matt Ray added singles.
Ray was the starter and loser. He went 1 2/3 innings, allowed three runs, five hits, walked two and struck out two. Skylar Lawson, Austin Burdine, Lee Quates and Tyler Dowdy all pitched in relief for the Trojans.
?The Bobcats will host Lincoln Trail College (Illinois) in a noon doubleheader on Saturday. They visit Faulkner State (Alabama) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
MDCC travels to play the University of West Alabama Junior Varsity on Tuesday.
