ELLISVILLE –
Peyton Attaway drove in five runs to help 11th-ranked Jones County Junior College to a 14-4, six-inning decision over Mississippi Delta Community College in game one of a doubleheader here Friday afternoon at Community Bank Park.
MDCC scored two runs without a hit in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of an error and two walks. But the Bobcats responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame.
Chris Morgan reached on an infield single and
Clint Sasser reached on an error to start the inning.
Chase Hensley singled Morgan home.
John Alan Wall was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and
Mason Irby was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
Attaway, a freshman from Shreveport, Louisiana, then ripped a two-run double to the wall in leftfield and
Chris Richardson's infield single scored a run to make it 5-2.
The Trojans then took advantage of two more Bobcat errors to score a pair of runs and make it 5-4 in the top of the second.
But JCJC came right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Dylan Manichia was hit by a pitch, Hensley drew a walk and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Wall's infield single drove in a run and Irby followed with a two-run single to make it 8-4.
The Bobcats made it 9-4 in the fourth when Hensley doubled with one out and scored on an error.
JCJC went up 10-4 in the fifth when
Carter Polles led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by
Josh Keel and scored on Morgan's single.
The Bobcats ended the game in the sixth with four runs.
Hensley singled, Irby drew a walk and Attaway then launched a three-run home run into the wind over the leftfield wall to make it 13-4. Polles then singled and Keel was hit by a pitch. Morgan walked to load the bases and Sasser walked to force in Polles and conclude the game.
Daniel Goff, 3-0, went the distance and posted the victory.
Goff, the reigning NJCAA Division II Pitcher of the Week, went six innings, gave up four unearned runs, five hits, walked three and struck out six.
Attaway homered, doubled and had the five RBIs, while Hensley doubled, singled twice, walked once and scored four runs. Morgan reached base in all five of his at-bats with three singles and two walks. Polles singled twice, while Irby singled once and had three RBIs. Wall and Richardson added singles.
Chandler Massengale started, went one inning and took the loss. He allowed seven runs (five earned) and walked three. Caleb Brown went 3 1/3 innings, allowed three runs (one earned), six hits, walked none and struck out two. Kenny Hinton pitched one inning, gave up four earned runs, three hits and walked three.
Ty Dean and DaShawn Lindsay had two singles each for MDCC, while Austin Burdine singled once.
JCJC improved to 8-1 with the win, while the Trojans fell to 5-3.
