ELLISVILLE –
Clint Sasser homered, tripled and singled and sparked No. 11 Jones County Junior College to a 6-3 victory over Lawson State Community College (Alabama) here Wednesday afternoon on a sunny, but cold and windy day at Community Bank Park.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning in game one of a doubleheader.
Sasser, a freshman from South Jones, tripled over Dallas Oliver's head in leftfield and scored on
Dylan Manichia's groundout.
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the second when
Carter Polles got a two-out single to center and
Mason Irby followed with a run-scoring double to center.
The Cougars tied it at 2-2 in the top of the third. LaDeavon Matthews and Gentry Ford both walked, but Matthews was picked off of second by JCJC pitcher
Will Hazen. Oliver then draw a walk and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Mason Schoettlin then hit a pop up down the leftfield line that the Bobcats could not catch, allowing both runners to score.
But JCJC got the runs back in the bottom of the third. Sasser led off by reaching on a bunt single and with two outs,
Tyler Schankin drilled a two-run home run over the leftfield wall. It was Schankin's second blast of the season.
Lawson State made it 4-3 in the fourth when Christopher Cox led off with a double and scored on a single by Joshua Vines.
The Bobcats made it 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Polles and Irby singled. Polles would later score on the front end of a double steal.
Sasser then closed the scoring with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth over the leftfield wall.
After Sasser's effort, the Bobcats got a double and a single from Irby, two singles from Polles and Schankin's homer.
Hazen, 2-0, was the starter and winner. He went four innings, allowed two runs, six hits, walked four and struck out three.
Tyler Schwaner pitched two innings, allowed no runs and one hit.
Will Simon struck out the side in the seventh to record his third save.
Lucas Hastings and Cox each doubled and singled for Lawson State, while Luke Ates, Vines and Schoettlin added singles.
Michael McWaters went the distance and took the loss. He allowed six runs (all earned), eight hits, walked one and struck out five.
