JACKSON – Jones College's
LJ Hackman (Columbus) and
Ky Pernell (Horn Lake) have been named to the NJCAA All-Region 23 Team.
In addition, head coach
Newton Mealer grabbed Region 23 Coach of the Year honors for a second straight season.
Hackman, a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard from Columbus, led the team in scoring with 16.9 points per game, steals with 70 and tied for second in assists with 121. He scored in double figures in 29 games, including 11 games of 20-plus points. Hackman shot 47.1 percent from the field and 84.2 percent from the free throw line. He finished his Bobcat career with 995 points. Hackman has already signed with Southern Miss.
Pernell, a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard from Horn Lake, averaged 14.4 points per game, 5.0 rebounds and led the team in assists with129. He led the team in 3-point field goals with 68. He shot 42.1 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free throw line. He had 27 points in a 74-66 loss to Chipola College on Nov. 26. Pernell ended his two years at Jones with 1,057 points. He has already signed with Texas State.
Mealer guided the Bobcats to a school-record 30 wins this season to go with consecutive MACCC, Region 23 and Gulf District championships. He led the Bobcats to back-to-back appearances in the NJCAA Division I Tournament for the first time in school history. Mealer is 91-30 in four seasons with the Bobcats.
Jones ended the season with a 30-4 record after falling to Angelina College (Texas) 74-62 in the second round of the NJCAA DI Tournament.
