Jones bows out of NJCAA Tournament in Round of 16

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Making its second straight appearance in the NJCAA Tournament, No. 5-seed Jones fell 74-62 to 12th-seed Angelina College Tuesday night at Hutchinson Sports Arena to close out a fantastic season.

Angelina, 28-6, moves on to face South Plains in the Elite 8 Wednesday night.

Jones' historic season ended at 30-4, the most wins in program history. The Bobcats also claimed their first-ever back-to-back conference and region titles and a No. 4 final ranking.

The MACCC is still looking for its first win in Hutch since Holmes in 2021.

Ky Pernell's three-pointer opened the scoring and Jones would take its largest lead, 9-5, with 14:56 to play in the opening half.

Angelina would score the next 12 to take control of the game and would not trail the rest of the night.

The Roadrunner lead was as many as 14 in the period and 37-27 at half.

The Bobcats clawed back within 47-43 midway through the second half after an Avery Thomas II three-pointer and steal and jumper by Ky.

But that's as close as it would get.

Angelina pushed back ahead with a 21-8 spurt and rolled to a second straight tournament win.

Christian Jones had 22 and Jordan Matthews 20 to lead the Roadrunners who shot 47 percent on the night.

Dimp Pernell had 17 points and seven boards, followed by 15 points from Thomas and 12 from Ky. The Bobcats shot 41 percent.
